please dont use trex or composite. i am planning to tear down my brand new deck because it get horribly slippery in cold and rainy days, and horribly hot in hot days. It is not good or comfortable. Please go with wood and stain it.

Why would you be on the deck when raining...or when extremely hot? No shoes?

Slippery to the next level when it snows or rain. Yes, we do need to go to the deck to refill our birdfeeders. The deck abuts our family room. If you step out to water the flower pots without shoes on, it is hot like a griddle during summer. It is very limiting. BUT - this is my 2 cents. You will obviously make the decision that works best for you. Good luck.

$27K total in 2018 for Trex Transcend deck, with two long stairs and railing, plus a paver patio - about 300 sq ft each. This replaced a wood deck that was in disrepair.

The Trex deck is still in perfect condition, with no maintenance. We have been very happy with it. It does get very hot in the summer. I haven't noticed it being particularly slippery. Our front walkway is concrete; that's the hazardous spot when it's icy.

Bummer to hear this. We have a wood deck and every 18 months it requires cleaning and restaining at about $1200. Plus, over time we need boards replaced. The ongoing maintenance costs are a bear. We like wood but it’s a bit of a hassle.

I hear you. We replaced a wood deck with trex, and now want to replace the trex with wood. But trex is so horribly uncomfortable and dangerous.

I’ve had both wood and trex, both with decks with western exposure and I far prefer Trex.

Anything outside in this climate in July is going to be extremely hot. Just go with a light colored Trex, and it’ll be marginally less so.

I got a basic, textured Trex and it’s not slippery.

I have little kids and the wood deck was always a source of concern- between splinters as it aged and loosening/warping boards causing nailheads to pop up, it was a hazard to bare feet that required constant vigilance.

I’ll take Trex or other composite anytime.

And it’s about 2 feet off the ground and we used the Trex ‘enhance’ line (their lowest price line). We did use hidden fasteners, which adds some to the cost. Had fascia trim around the deck and a wood barrier from the deck to the ground to keep wasps and other pests from nesting underneath.

We paid $22k.

That's an amazing price for the DC metro area. Who did the work for you? I want them to come quote my new deck!

Don't talk if you are not informed. Enough with this garbage.

Trex is American based using American sourced recycled materials. Tariffs don't affect it.

Yes! Trump is so smart! Trex has increased pricing on all composite decking lines by 7.5%, with the exception of their top line Signature series which has been increased by 15% for the 2025 decking season

Envision Outdoor Products is another US decking company. Their premium capped deck boards are very good, better than Trex and TimberTech. Envision is a little harder to find, your contractor has to go thru a decking distributor. The price increases are driven by labor, resin, saw dust, and freight costs increases.

If you’re keeping to a budget, go with simple wooden railings. The fancy cable or metal railings can account for up to 30% - 40% of the total cost. Also, don’t forget to have the top of the beams where the deck boards sit on taped with water resistant tape. Costs a little more but will extend the life of the deck.

We love our Trex Transcend, it is shady most of the day so doesn't get hot. It had stairs and railing plus two levels, was about $35,000 prior to Covid.

Here's how we did it. I sourced the materials (knew we wanted Trex Enhance) from 84 Lumber. https://84lumber.com/projects-plans/deck-packages/

Then I contracted with Martinez Carpentry (Elmer Martinez) to build it. Nothing fancy, I had marked off the size of the deck, height, etc and talked through what we wanted. martcarpentry@gmail.com

**you can file for permits through your county office, its not that difficult.

So you're in effect acting as your own general contractor, rather than paying a decking company for this. For a project like ours, it shaved 5-8K off the cost.

Crazy how stupid people can be. Things stay wait after the rain ends, sweetheart. People go outside when it's hot outside. And seriously? You've never stepped outside without shoes on? Do you live under a rock? Just wow.

Love our trex and will never get wood again. Wood is too much upkeep.

Never had the slippery issues. I wear sandals in the summer when any surface is hot.

I hate decks....so much upkeep. I'd look into a paved patio instead, because it's very little upkeep.
