Anyone thinking of transferring?

My kid transferred sophomore year. Going into freshman year he had every intention of staying 4 years. A semester in he realized the school wasn’t a good fit. It’s a ton of work to transfer. You really want to do the entire application process again?? Transfers generally get the $hit end of the deal housing and scheduling wise. Your credits may not fully transfer. Is your kid prepared to do a summer semester or stay an extra semester past 4 years? Transferring is not all sunshine and rainbows. Yes sometimes kids need to transfer but going into freshman year knowing you’re going to transfer is a bonkers. But in DCUM it’s par for the course.

Agree with all of this! My DD transferred because the first school was a bad fit and she really struggled to adjust. She transferred way up in ranking and loves the new school now. But first semester was starting over again and there was no campus housing so she was off campus in an apartment. Very hard to meet people that way! She had to adjust to a different school with different norms, etc. She is happy she transferred but wishes she had found a better fit to begin with. I would not recommend going in with the intention to transfer. It is very disruptive both academically and socially.

Agree, it is also just a terrible mindset to have. To be so focused on rank that you’re pushing your dc to transfer ‘up’ because of it.

Transferring is fine and the process is easier than applying as a freshman.

Many students with "guaranteed" transfer options attend a college or university for one year knowing that they are almost certainly leaving at the end of the academic year. I attended school (an LAC) with several who had such options to Cornell University. Those students were easily among the happiest, most disciplined students in my freshman year.

If a student goes into a college or university with the intention to transfer up, they tend to work hard and earn excellent grades.

DC thought about it after getting his college results, but ended up loving the school he was at, so he decided not to.

Nephew considered transferring out of Brown but ended up staying. Felt it was too quirky, not social and not as prestigious as the ivies that rejected him but he likes it now and got a great internship for this summer through a faculty member.

Does this mean community college transfers are “easier” and not looked down on by selective colleges?

I think this is a poor mindset to have going into Freshman year. But yeah, ofc transfers happen.

Princeton and Amherst only take CC/vet transfers.

I know kids - including this year - who are deferring and reapplying.

Does that work?

Ours is applying to a few lacs after a first year at a t20. They just really didn't enjoy the experience and feel the student body is way too uptight, preprofessional, and the education, while strong, really lacking in their interactions with professors. It was a much bigger fit issue than we expected.

Would be helpful if you named the T20 school.
