| The high school will also have “Green days” of group running in the summer where rising freshmen and other athletes can warm up for the cross country training program. Right now track and field is focused on finishing the spring season, but in July and August they will have green days. |
|
Look at the track and field information on your schools website.
This is the information from McLean high school for example. Includes running plans for summer. https://mcleanathletics.org/teams/3520666/cross%20country/varsity |

Our HS coaches are terrible so o get wanting to get outside coaching and advice.
Health Baller is great for performance training and injury prevention. Also it sounds like th St James is starting a running program and it will run over the summer. The new head of running at st James also runs MVP league and does running coaching |
I would love to know times for her to go D1. I know you can find it on the internet but also nice to hear personal stories. |

i don't want to identify myself but for track:
under 5 minute mile and under 2:11 for the 800 as a sophmore for XC: under 18 for a 5k Junior year for indoor track has also been really good and competed at New Balance Indoor Nationals. There are some big outdoor meets coming up and i expect time drops due to Healthy Baller. |
How does the average middle school kid/9th grader learn about strength building and weight lifting? |
Is your 9th grader keeping up with older girls? Big drops in time. If you have milesplit subscription you can look at the progression of runner from 9th grade to 12th grade and also see college commitments. There is also a big difference in D1 programs. Does your 9th grader have a target school or region? Like running D1 in the SEC is hard but running D1 at VCU (great program) might be realistic. |

Sites like runcruit and tfrrs are good for benchmarks for schools.
Also get a subscription to mile stat. There’s free results data but more info if you have a membership |
| I find the D1 track standards to be helpful to gauge level needed but also find it more helpful to look at schools around us and see how runners are doing overall. If you are in Virginia- there is a younger set of runners from west Springfield, Robinson, Woodson, South Lakes and South County that have impressive times and I assume these girls will be recruited. |
|
Just FYI, there is hardly any “recruitin of track kids there’s just MAYBE a spot on the team. But you have to also get into the school academically as well and, or ant least be close, also be able to pay for it. There’s no scholarship money. If you get any money, it will be “merit” money for your academics.
Example, my friend‘s daughter is playing softball at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. She is getting $20,000 of merit money, but it is still 60 K/ year. |
|
You clearly don’t know anything about track.
You are correct about softball but incorrect about track. |
How is what I said wrong? Track is a late recruiting sport, you will not get money for running track, you will not get a free ride for track, only “merit” from the school, and you’re not going to get into a top school just by running good times. You will have to be somewhat close (bottom quartile or test optional) academically. There also just aren’t that many track spots open, (but more for girls than boys) especially at the d1 level. Ask me how I know. Nothing I said is incorrect. |

track is going up to 45 scholarships next year.
Currently they have 18 for women and that is more than a lot of other sports. And as a parent that is dealing with D1 recruiting right now- there are a lot of top schools looking for runners. Sure- being well rounded helps. and, I am happy to pretend that track is like softball to keep competition away. Even mediocre track programs have offered 70% coverage of all tuition and room/board/fees as a starting point. |

Can experienced parents share what kind of diet their kids are eating?
Aside from eating a balanced diet, is there anything else I should consider? -Parent of 9th grade boy runner |
| Extra calories and protein at every meal. |
