NASA's beautiful Roman space telescope launch defunded: what are they thinking?

It might not be a financial priority right now. Also, it may be that private industry could build it cheaper and faster, with the US simply leasing time along with other countries. NASA has already taken advantage of the cost savings (and functional) SpaceX rockets. Is this any different?

You'll sing a different tune when there is a Chinese moon base looking down on us.

Sputnik, baby!

but spacex is not building things like the roman space telescope, which will study exo planets. they are nuts to cancel this.

I guess no more looking for life in the Universe for us, just trying to make a barren red rock a miserable prision for SpaceX employees.

+ 1 - here's the answer.

Elon is not going to have competitors. In his current position, he is going to do all to help himself. I'm not sure why this would be a secret or a surprise? Wouldn't anyone do this? I mean, I hate the guy and think he's a cretin but it makes complete sense why he'd be out to defund as much of NASA and any technical innovation that he feels his organizations can engage.

In other words, Elon IS the fraud and the waste.

Brought to you by the US voters. I don't know why they want to give their money to a freaky billionaire like Elon instead of NASA but they do.

right, but he makes rockets, not precision scientific instruments. Not launching the roman space telescope doesn't help him.

these precision instruments cannot just sit around. on earth, they fall apart. they need the vacuum of space. they are throwing away the billion dollars it took to build it.

When Obama was President it was declared that NASA's primary mission is outreach to the Muslim world.

I was wondering if people who say this are spreading disinformation or just easily fooled by misinformation? In other words are you purposely lying or just badly misinformed?

Reaching out to the Muslim world is not part of NASA chief Charlie Bolden's job, the White House said Monday.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Bolden probably misspoke in recent remarks in which the NASA chief and former astronaut said one of his foremost tasks in leading NASA is to engage with Muslim nations about science.

"That was not his task, and that's not the task of NASA," Gibbs said during Monday's daily briefing.

The guy said it twice, once in a prepared speech and once in an interview. He never disavowed his statement.

It didn't mean much, it was dopey hamfisted PR, and 15 years later MAGA
morons are trying to draw an equivalence between a dopey PR effort and cancelling a telescope project.
