Chicago summer program?

DC got accepted to an enrichment program. Private school, 4.0 GPA UW, 36 ACT.

DD waitlisted for 1 week STEM program. No grade lower than 95 UW; 1490 SAT (has only taken once so far); excellent recs; UMC coming from rigorous private school. Somewhat disappointed but I’m glad to save the $$!

Applied on time for 3 week residential college. All A/A- except 1 B+ (which has now improved to A-). Private school. No SAT score yet.

Reddit, a lot on waitlist, they anticipate many have alternatives. Just wait and see.

Did your DC get in other programs?

Tell your DC not to get discouraged. My son get denied a spot in the summer program and was accepted as a first year via EA one year later.

Thanks for this. What happened in between all of that? Did he do a different summer program? Apply elsewhere ED?

No. He's my first so frankly we were not aware of these summer programs until later into his junior year, when he started showing some interest in college. Which also ironically was spurred by the much maligned spam emails of UChicago. A certain email subject line from UChicago piqued his interest.

So he applied to two summer programs that year. I'd like to say the other was Columbia but I cannot be certain. He got rejected to both.

The following fall was his senior year so he just applied EA to UChicago and RD to a host of other schools. He had good outcomes.

My DD was waitlisted as well. 4.0 UW at affluent suburban public school, SAT 1560.

Many of UChicago’s 1-week enrichment programs used to be free, irrespective of need. My DC did Neubauer Phoenix STEM Scholars last summer, and while they had a super fun week, I wouldn’t have paid the $2500 + travel it now costs.

Don’t go to a summer program thinking you’ll get a leg up when applying there. There is no connection whatsoever

That’s not true for UChicago, where you could apply ED0.

As the parent of a summer session participant whose 4 closest friends in their cohort later applied and were admitted ED0, I disagree with you when it comes to UChicago specifically.
