It’s required by the state. Only the state can excuse the days and it has not seen fit to do so. |
Because MCPS didn’t use any of the days it set aside earlier in the year. Either they need to add more days into the calendar, or use the earlier days they identify. -NP |
| By adding 3 half days at the end of the year when seniors are done, AP tests are long over, and camps will have begun, it's basically a big F** to the State (for not waiving) 2 days! |
Especially since they switched the Friday that they had said would be a full day to a half day. |
|
Whyyyyyy
Honestly these school schedules have gotten so ridiculous I think the Governors need to step in. |
| I work in an mcps high school. I will be at work for all of this those days. My elementary school children will not attend the Monday and Tuesday. |
Or maybe Mr bigly can send down an EO about the last 3 early release days? Don't high schools close on day of their school's graduation ceremony? If this is still how they do it, that's another day gone for 9th - 11th grade students after Memorial day. |
Yes, but that's the case every year. |
| I hope the half days are spent learning life skills |
We have one Ap class with mostly seniors and the teacher basically said class is done after the exam. |
Why? You don’t teach your kids at home? |
It’s a big FU at the parents. They could have cancelled one of the professional development days after the snow days… |
No it’s not. If anything, the only people who really need to go Monday and Tuesday are teachers and they already sorta knew that when the year was previously extended to the Monday. If you need childcare coverage those half days, send your kid. If you don’t or it’s easier for you to arrange full day coverage elsewhere, don’t send them. If you want to travel that week, they’ve all but given their blessing to proceed with previously made plans. There will not be teaching and learning those days whether you send your kids or not. If you’re looking for childcare ideas there will be lots of 14/15 year olds who are kind of too old for camp but too young for jobs who would probably happily babysit your kids in the afternoon for some Apple cash. |

It’s pretty obvious that they designed this solution to the state’s requirement and waiver denial specifically to discourage attendance on the last two days. They’re ending instruction the same day they were always going to end instruction.
We should start the school year earlier, have more instructional days built into the calendar from the start, and accept that any “instructional days” tacked on to the end of the school year will be a mere formality, but not actually used for instruction because everyone is burned out by the end of the year. |
To do what? We are hamstrung by state mandated days off, employment contracts, discord if some religions get holidays off but not others, people who insist that we can’t start school earlier in August because they absolutely must take their vacations in August, testing schedules that require instruction to be completed weeks before the school year ends. There is no calendar that will please the vast majority of stakeholders. We’re all going to dislike some aspect of a schedule that has to meet all of these demands. |
