High Point (recruit) or UT?

I seriously don't know how this is a question.

Full scholarship sports recruit versus going to a school 50 percent of his classmates are attending

More like 6 percent. Very difficult to get into UT-Austin in-state if you aren't a class rank auto admit.

High Point is becoming much more prestigious.

High Point is just a shade away from Liberty University.

If your DC is happy with that comparison, go for it.

I would fear that High Point, especially if you are not choosing it due to political affinity, would be socially and economically limiting. However, it might provide a close community of like-minded people for your son.

I get wanting to get away from classmates to start fresh. But UT is so big. Plenty of places to get away from the past. But to attend a place like HP seems very shortsighted for long term life choices and career prospects. Is this decision being driven by money and wanting to focus on lax instead of studying?

No, it’s wanting to play a D1 sport in college over club.

I think this is very shortsighted. D1 sports at a better university, I get. But not at HP, especially when he has the opportunity to go to a significantly better school. If you can't really afford UT, then that is another matter. I would choose the full ride over UT then, especially since it sounds like DS really wants to do the lax thing.

Given the responses that appear to be from OP it sounds like your kid has already decided & that choice is lower cost. It’s their life that they’ve funded, let them go? It’s a respectable school that offers respectable outcomes.

(Personally, I’d choose UT-A. I was a D1 athlete—year round sport tho— & it was a lot. Definitely not a “typical” university experience with twice a day practice & competitions over Spring Breaks. It gave me some wonderful experiences but I’m 50-50 as to whether I’d endorse it for my child. But I also understand wanting to get away from your hs crowd)

Agree. OP, your kid will be much better off long term if his resume says UT, vs. High Point. There is a reason HP is courting him. I know the idea of D1 is like a shiny object that has your attention, and UT seems like "nothing special" -- but, all that glitters is not gold.

UT, hands down..

There is a reason High Point is willing to pay 100%

Depends on the school, 50 percent of kids who applied at my kid’s school were accepted and about half will go!

He’s not political, what a bizarre comment saying like minded. Get a grip.

I'm not the PP you're responding to, but how are we to know that he isn't like-minded politically with HP given that he applied there.

It feels like the answers are frustrating you because they aren't what you expected to hear, so you are lashing out.

What major?

Regardless, UT by a million.

UT.

HP has ongoing accreditation issues and very questionable educational value. I’d never pick that school over a reputable place like UT.

What school sends 50 percent of their students to UT?
