Anonymous Letter through Snail Mail

If it repeated harassment, I'd contact the post office. It is a federal offense, so although they may not be able to do anything about it, they would probably try.

To the point about the typewriter and printer, both tend to produce unique variations that are a kind of "signature". So if you had something from a person's printer or typewriter, you may be able to match it to the letters.

OP,

The post office might be able to tell where it was posted.
Everything else mentioned, DNA, matching type to typewriter or printer, takes this to another level. Without direct access, I'm not clear how a PI would get any of this possible evidence.

OOP I meant to add: or OP without a search warrant.

I believe Gavin de Becker's recommendation for harrassment/stalking is to just ignore. Have your mother throw the letters away or put them aside for you to keep/read.

PP here again. I'd like to remind everyone that simply being an asshole is not against the law. There's not anything the police can do until the behavior crosses stalker/threat laws.

The post office should be able to help you identify where (city and PO) where it was post marked.

b/c this last letter is not necessarily threatening

It's cruel, written by a coward, and filled with lies, but there isn't enough to punish anyone over it.

I simply want it to stop, and that can only happen if I have enough concrete evidence to prove who sent it.

Over the years, when tragic events have occurred (mainly deaths, unfortunately), we've been attacked, for lack of a better term, but these incidents have been spotty.

It's all so complex and stems from very dysfunctional family relationships. But, sadly, although we've cut these people out of our lives, they still - on occasion - manage to re-enter our lives in the most negative way.

Thanks for any insight, PPs! I'm moving ahead with the P. I. plan to see how far that gets us. I just want some peace.

Once you have some info, it may not be actionable by the police, but you could certainly say to the perpetrator -- I know it's you and I am going to contact the police if it happens again.

Don't pay to hire a P.I. Keep the letters and submit them to the police-that's how to get peace. Go by the book and do not retaliate. Hope this helps.

Many of you need to put down the TV remote and step away from the CSI reruns. DNA testing? Fingerprints? WTF?
Anonymous
As long as it's nothing legally actionable (threats, etc.) there's not much you can do. Even if you get proof of who sent it, what makes you think it's going to stop? Have you thought about bluffing? You could call the person and tell them you has the letter trace to them, if you think it would male any difference.

But frankly it sounds like the best way to avoid this kind of drama in the future is to just ignore it. The more you respond to it the more you are giving the sender exactly what s/he wants.

17:21 has a point. If you recognize the type of letter as soon as you open it, then don't even read it. Don't bother emoting about it.

If you are still in casual communication with this person, you could wonder aloud in passing why s/he sends these, as they make you laugh and show what an imbecile s/he is.

If it is cruel and written by a coward, then it sounds upsetting everyone is their goal. Why would you want to communicate to them that they made this achievement?

Burn them, don't open them.
