Woodberry Forest is really nice too. |
Episcopal - better boarding school experience. Too few boarders at STA. |
Typical DCUM with posters who can’t read.
OP didn’t ask for which school offers the better boarding experience. OP asked whether they should go to the school that has stronger academics or a better dorm and boarders who aren’t international. This is not a question that can be settled by DCUM as OP sounds like they haven’t established their own priorities. It’s a joke to suggest Episcopal has excellent college admissions. They are seriously mediocre. If academic excellence is the priority, the clear choice is STA. Also untrue that Episcopal has more activities. Episcopal does have a better quality of life if that is the priority. Less academic pressure, more relaxed vibe, and everyone is boarding vs. the tiny fraction of the STA population that boards. Beautiful campus with great facilities. |
Episcopal school hands down for the Boarding experience. |
OP asked for advice. Posters largely responded with the advice to go for the better boarding situation. |
Given that admissions decisions are out already, OP and her son know what their options are. I agree that a school where boarding is the default makes sense. Episcopal fits that perfectly. |
I find it hard to believe that Episcopal doesn’t have more weekend and late evening activities than STA. Can you say why you say that’s not true? |
I’d pick STA for the academics. The campus is beautiful; it’s in the city; and, boarders and day students form strong friendships through sports and other activities.

What are your son’s priorities? A better boarding experience or more rigorous academics. Like the other posters have mentioned , STA’s boarding section is tiny. I don’t think he’ll get a great boarding experience there.
Academics can be as rigorous as he can handle at most good privates in this area. If he’s a good student, he might get a better chance at a good college coming from Episcopal where he isn’t competing with the ultra competitive kids at STA. Also, as others suggested, I’d seriously consider Georgetown Prep . |
STA boarding isn't traditional boarding due to it's size but these kids blend in very well with the rest of the grade. STA college destinations for those in the top20% of the class are pretty second-to-none. The destinations for boys below this are pretty great too. If you think your son can be an absolute academic rockstar as a boarder (which in my mind would be very hard to do--no parent around to nag at all) then go for it! |
Well they have to get in first. Many good candidates apply to both STA and Episcopal, but don’t get admitted to either. |
Given the timing doesn't it seem likely that OP's kid has been accepted to both, and that is why they are asking? |
You are wrong. I challenge you to look at EHS college acceptances for 2025 on Insta -- much better than STA (which I know is not on Insta). And yes, EHS has WAY more activities and better facilities and better teachers (their teachers are given free housing in houses on campus).

If you are boarding, why not go somewhere further north? Only do Episcopal if you are MC or maybe UMC. It's a path to nowhere. |
