St. Albans (Boarding) vs. Episcopal High School

Anonymous
My son will be a boarder at either STA or Episcopal High School. We are from the Atlanta area. I am not sure which to go for. STA is more academically prestigious and likely to help him in college admissions. But they only have one dorm, and it doesn't seem that nice. It's also dominated by international applicants. EHS seems like a much nicer place to be a boarder, but it doesn't have the academic reputation that STA has. Do you have any advice?

You pretty much summed it up. Do you want your son to go to a top-notch academic school with cramped plain-Jane dorms? Or do you want your son to attend a mediocre school with fantastic facilities?

EHS is also dominated by international students as are many boarding schools.

If your comment is a code for racism, suggest you stay away from STA.

This isn't true. International students make up under 20% of the overall population at Episcopal. Otherwise, it's about 35% local and 45% from the rest of the US, and unlike pretty much any boarding school, 100% of the student board.

St. Albans is a day school with a very small group of boarders. Yes, it is a great school, but it won't provide a traditional boarding school experience if that's what you're looking for.

Neither are easy to get into.

This. I’ve lived in dc for 50 years and I’ve never heard of anyone boarding at st albans. Did you look at Georgetown prep?

I would send my boarding son to Georgetown Preo.

STA's boarding facility if pretty small but it's there. I went to NCS and knew guys who boarded. Lots of shenangians happening...but this was in the 80s. Maybe it's more locked down than it was back then....

If you want your son to have the boarding experience, definitely Episcopal.

Agree. STA has so few boarders that it certainly won’t give any kind of boarding school experience. Episcopal offers the full package and experience and will have excellent academics and way more activities.

Episcopal or Georgetown Prep

If your son wants a more traditional boarding school experience, Episcopal. STA isn’t really a boarding school, it just offers board to a handful of students per grade - mostly, as you note, international students.

Why are these the choices? They're both good but I don't think of either as destination schools for boarding if you're based in Atlanta. Why not somewhere where boarding is pretty much the default? Andover, Choate, Groton, etc.
