How far would you go if you had a live in nanny steal from you?

Have a conversation saying I know you stole jewelry please give it back , and if she does then just fire , if she doesn't than fire and report to the police

Use the police report as leverage to get her out of the house because you probably don't have a contract or lease agreement

I'd have asked for the jewelry back. If she returned it, I'd only fire her. If she didn't, I'd file a police report and post a warning on Nextdoor.

I would do that, but if asked for a reference, I would absolutely say she lied and stole. This is not a one-off event, OP. It's her personality. She should not be working in jobs where she has such opportunities.

We caught her stealing jewelry on camera and were informed by a friend that she told another family that we hadn’t paid her in weeks (completely false). She also had a friend over who was definitely intoxicated in our living room and we had to asked her to leave. We found out the friend had recently been arrested for drugs, she claimed she didn’t know but we think she did. She is now trying to get a new nanny job. We haven’t done anything thus far. Should we do anything? File police report? Warn others? Respond to her Nextdoor post asking for jobs that she literally stole from us and spread a rumor? Our concern is she obviously knows where we live and we think she is unstable.

Theft over $ amount = felony.
Lock her up for a few years.

Does she know you saw her on camera?
How did you handle it at the time?

I wouldn’t do anything about the rumors, they’re rumors, it could be someone else stirring the situation. I was a nanny years ago and after I left a family they thought I’d told people they hadn’t paid their share of my social security. This came up years later. I told them I know they paid if because I got the statements. No idea where that rumor came from. But they legit thought I’d told people this and I hadn’t.

This plus change all access she may have had to your home

Since you think (rightfully so!) that this person is unstable then it is best if you do not try to start anything w/her at this point.

Just be grateful that she is out of your life now.
Good riddance……

I would fire her and report to police. Change locks immediately and install cameras.

Why would she steal if there's cameras and has a job lol sounds like a typical lazy American who just wants handouts because you must be legal to get benefits

Tl;dr

...and this is why a live-in nanny or au pair is risky.
