Laptop bag for college-bound daughter

The girlies are carrying Longchamp bags now, not laptops. Don’t have a recommendation on another high quality similar style

Kids use laptop backpacks - not cross body shoulder bags.

My daughter used a medium sized Madewell Transport leather tote. I am still amazed at how much it survived, and she is still using it post-college, looks fine. It’s enough to fit her MacBook, water bottle, a notebook and some essentials. Anything more than that - Herschel backpack it was.

Get her a LV Neverfull now, the prices will probably only go up. Maybe go with the black print if you hate logos, but the canvas may be better for long-term use. That's what my college aged girl uses when she doesn't want a backpack.

It’s a beautiful bag.

This 1000x nicer than neverfull. But not covered with LV label.

OP here-- she hasn't had a backpack since 6th grade and she doesn't plan to start now. (Although she did coo over my "vintage" (lol) JanSport she found in a closet at my parents' house!) She's had a series of cheap shoulder bags and yes, I've asked her, and she wants something similar but more grown-up.

That Pyramid bag looks very nice! Bit more than I'd planned on spending though. We both loved what we saw at Shinola-- they seem like they'd age well-- but we agreed that $800-900 was too much for the purpose. I'm thinking $400-500 is more appropriate?

Good call on waiting til she gets to college and seeing what she wants once she's there. It would suck to get to school with a $500 bag and never use it because it stands out in the wrong way, or is impractical. And her birthday is in September! Plenty of time to get a sense of what would work best.

Then I’d go with something like the Cuyana. Portland leather also gets recommended here a lot. My daughter used a nverfull in college (splurge gift from my sister) and bought the Pyramid soon after college. $ for $, the Neverfull is absolutely not worth the money.

+1. Kids use backpacks.

I have a Portland Leather tote and I’ve come to hate the fact that it is unlined. The “leather lint” gets on clothes (like if I throw a light sweater in my bag) and anything else that has the ability to rub against the sides. I retired it.

Totally. Not sure why this is a post. A nice computer bag is the equivalent of wearing height heels as you walk to class. A back pack is the most functional!

She's going to get over her backpack hate when she has to lug multiple textbooks and a laptop across campus. Putting fashion before shoulder pain is nuts.

So... tell an 18 year old that what she wants isn't actually what she wants, and buy her what WE think she should have? Like we would for a 4 year old?

NP. Fancy laptop bags are definitely a thing on campus now. OP’s daughter knows what she wants and is on trend.

Same issue with unlined leather bags!!! I will never buy one again.
