Most are medical, being arrested or drug use.

Not being able to do a push up is not a driving factor to being ineligible.

Thank you for this information. I had the impression that obesity was a much bigger factor than it actually is. Along with things like not being able to do a pull up.

My nephew is in the army and said many get rejected for smoking pot more than inability to do a push up. Also other factors like food allergies, autism, and autoimmune conditions make automatic rejection.

Jesus, people. Read the links. Yes, obesity is a major issue.

Why do you love that?

Because she doesn't want to lose her children to MAGA idiots and their stupid billionaire wars. We aren't all drinking the kkkool aid Karen.

It is about 11%. There are not that many obese people trying to enlist to begin with.

I work in recruiting and state by state we know where to recruit for each service. While obesity is a disqualifying category for volunteer service; for draft eligibility it can be waived easily.

While drugs, criminal activity and medical are not waivers as they pose risk to the force.

Being overweight means you (most likely) would not be top tier combatant.

I had thought that many of these types of measures were originally put into place decades ago by Republicans— concerned that large percentages of the population were physically unfit, and if a military draft were instituted, the US would be hampered in their objectives due to the lack of available, fit potential draftees.

So, are my assumptions wrong? If not, then what’s changed? Does military effectiveness no longer require the same levels of physical fitness?

No it doesn't. Pete Hegseth is looking to change that.

And apparently transgenders as well. Now the question is, to avoid such a potential draft, is the trans operation a requirement?

This.
If the US reinstated the draft they can change any criteria they want.
Most recruits lose 10-15% of their body weight in a volunteer force.
Drafting a medically obese person means they would expect to see 20% or more weight loss in boot camp and then teach them to drive a truck or forklift.
They won’t be a paratrooper- but they would serve if the military needed it.

Preexisting medical and convicts are a liability and hamper combat effectiveness. Out of shape people can load ammo, pack chutes and drive trucks.

When we've needed to increase our military, such as Afghanistan, the military lowers its standards. They've allowed more lower IQ, overweight, and convicted criminals in at that point.
