Jesus, people. Read the links. Yes, obesity is a major issue.
It is about 11%. There are not that many obese people trying to enlist to begin with. I work in recruiting and state by state we know where to recruit for each service. While obesity is a disqualifying category for volunteer service; for draft eligibility it can be waived easily. While drugs, criminal activity and medical are not waivers as they pose risk to the force. Being overweight means you (most likely) would not be top tier combatant.
This. If the US reinstated the draft they can change any criteria they want. Most recruits lose 10-15% of their body weight in a volunteer force. Drafting a medically obese person means they would expect to see 20% or more weight loss in boot camp and then teach them to drive a truck or forklift. They won’t be a paratrooper- but they would serve if the military needed it. Preexisting medical and convicts are a liability and hamper combat effectiveness. Out of shape people can load ammo, pack chutes and drive trucks.
