Boston University guaranteed transfer

Lots of kids come in as sophomores so it's not a hard transition. The biggest drawbacks were making sure her credits would be accepted at BU and dorm choice. Some of her credits did not transfer and she's had to take a heavy load of classes to catch up. She's probably going to have to do a semester of summer school or stay an extra semester. She's an engineering major. I'm assuming with the guaranteed transfer program you would get direction on this when picking classes and a school to go to the first year. DD had no intention of ever transferring but things changed.

Also, transfer kids seem to get the crappy dorms. They put them all in the same dorms so there is a community of kids just coming in but the dorms are pretty awful. And that's being generous. Some of them are downright gross.

Colleges aren't resorts, but the "crappy dorms" statement is a stretch. BU has a wide assortment of good housing, especially for upperclassmen, which I assume your DD is now (unless she graduated already).

I am not judging the rank, I am surprised about the tuition without merit aid at that level.

There are .3000+ 4 year colleges in the US.
40 something is top level.

Old, moldy, some downright gross bathrooms. Cracked floor tiles, windows that won't fully close or open, heat that blows over 100 with no way to adjust. RA was moved out for a few days for visible mold in her room. My kid hasn't seen any bugs or rodents just a really old building. Yes, it's an historic building but some of the bathrooms really need some upgrading. It's liveable for a year but definitely not a nice dorm.

It's Danielson Hall if you want to read reviews on ratemydorm.com. There are pictures as well.

My kid is currently living in said "crappy dorm" room, mold and all. Yes, they have good dorms but the transfer kids get put in the crappy one the first year.

Not all transfers will necessarily get assigned there.

Relax mom.

No, they won't. Some will get nicer ones and some will get even worse ones. It's just the reality of BU housing. You could end up in a really old decrepit building. Just stating facts here.

This is just rude. I am sorry. My DD got in but would not understand the sacrifice we are making to afford it at full price if this were her living quarters.

What percentage of BUnstudents opt to rent apartments after sophomore year.

DC received a BU guarantee transfer offer. He accepted it and went to another university that was his top choice anyway. We advised DC to accept the BU guarantee transfer option in case his top choice was all he dreamed off/didn’t work out. Turned out to be a win-win in our opinions.

DC loves his current school so isn’t transferring.

PP with the daughter in the "crappy dorm". I don't know the % but a google search said about 30%. She is living off campus next year. There are no good answers. The Boston rental market is tough. There is a ton of demand for a very limited supply. This is why they guarantee 4 years of housing. A lot of the private rentals are in the same state as some of the dorms.

You would think an influential alum like AOC would be able to raise money for improvements.

It’s ranked 41

Some yes some no.
Is that a news??

As long as you can afford it, the school is better than some of the top 40 schools.

Those of you with kids there, are they happy? Would love to hear from engineering majors in particular! I've heard grade deflation is an issue making classes a little stressful.

My kid was admitted today and she was very excited! But we don't know any kids who go there.

Mine is very happy, and her friends all seem great. She’s not in engineering, but some of her friends are.
As for grade deflation, I can't say for sure if it's real, but students work really hard to get good grades.

Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with her college experience at BU.
