I’m sure. But since Democrats are good people, I’m sure they will recreate this beloved Institute as a charity, instead of just using this tragedy to virtue signal and bash Trump voters

My Dad when he immigranted to the U.S. was shocked that you didn't have to pay to use the library as he did where he came from. Robust free libraries help create an educated populace. Of course Trump wants them gone

Yeah, there are an awful lot of local things that would shut down without federal funding. Maybe that's for the best? Maybe we shouldn't have a country with local things all over it. Maybe all the smaller towns should just die quickly rather than slowly. Maybe.

This federal agency can only afford to spend about $25,000 per library. That’s not enough money for the red tape of strings attached to be worth it for local libraries.

IMLS supports a lot of the small libraries and museums around the country. For example, things like second tier founding fathers' houses and local historical societies. It's a favorite source of pork for the House, especially for exurban members.

It's going to be hard for a lot of those places to survive. They don't appeal to the big donors. Between the reduced tax value of charitable contributions and the economic squeeze on the middle class it wil be difficult to fully meet operational expenses.

I can't get worked up about it because compared to everything else it's a small disappointment. We will be losing a lot of history, especially in exurban and rural areas, though.

Where is the commensurate cut in taxes then? For everyone. If we can’t have the things many of us want, then I don’t want to pay for Trump’s golf games and new airplanes.

We shouldn’t be sad to lose pork projects. If Congress wants to bribe constituents, they should do it with their own (suspiciously large piles of) money, not with taxpayer funds.

I know, right? Why do we have a federal government or pay taxes when it should all be local?

Did you ever take an economics class? It's pretty clear that Musk and his DOGE kids never did. Or a substantial number of members of Congress.

Not really. The dollar amounts are very small. A lot if it is just free books pushing particular ideologies popular in DC or distributing pork to help Congressional incumbents get re-elected.

Trump cut taxes in his first term and will do it again in his second term. Democrats say we need to increase taxes. I guarantee you your personal tax cut will be big enough to fully fund your share of the Institute of Museum and Library Services with plenty left over
