DOGE trying to destroy The Institute of Museum and Library Services

Anonymous
This is breaking news.

DOGE was on site this morning and is probably still there.

They did not like that this news was spreading on Reddit and, instead of escorting people out, they told everyone to go home.

This is bad if you like museums and libraries and even if you don't.

Never heard of it.

Museums and libraries are great but this kind of crap is happening every day and I'm just numb at this point.

Noooooooo! Not The Institute of Museum and Library Services! Anything but that!

Wait, what’s the Institute of Museum and Library Services? At first it sounded like a Museum, or a Library, and I was like, outraged. But now I’m like, wait, how many work-from-home $100K bureaucrats does this “Institute” employ, and what do they do all day?

You know what? Now I’m pissed. Listen ti the action verbs this institute uses to describe its “actions.”

Frame, identify, advance, empower, champion, strengthen, address, incorporate, advance.

Uh, yeah, they don’t do anything. Without stealing taxpayer money, this would never exist. No customers would pay for it, no philanthropists would donate to it.

Prove me wrong! Take up a collection to help the Institute continue its important work as a private charity.

This is what authoritarians do...destroy institutions of knowledge and learning so the voice of authority lies in the leader.

Your numbness isn’t from the horror of the cuts, it’s from never noticing or caring about this institute, which is yet another shameless government boondoggle.

There's a lot of parts of government you don't hear about, but they ensure things work. You'll notice when they aren't there any longer.

The ONLY Americans who will notice the absence of the Institute of Museum and Library Services are the 70 people who work there (from home, it turns out, shocker).

Doubtful. I've worked in and for the federal government for 25 years.

Libraries all over the country receive funding from this agency. You sound incredibly ignorant.

LOL. This is not an institution of knowledge and learning. Look into it.

The budget is only $300 million. If I’m ignorant, the champions of learning will quickly raise the money to recreate this as a charity so it can continue its important work.

IMLS distributes federal grant funds be museums and libraries around the country. They were established by Congress in 1996 as a reorganization of Institute of Museum Services established in 1976.

That is ABSOLUTELY not true. They administer grants to museums and libraries across the country. For example, in FY24 they awarded $15 million in grants to Texas libraries, museums, and the state archives. I'm sure the nice red state of TX will be sad to see that money go away.

I hate the doggies, and disapprove of their methods. They should be working on a package for the next budget cycle.

That noted, Congress should consider these grants and this agency as something that should go. It's funding all comes from borrowed funds at 4%. Is it worth it?
