It's quite sad that DC is a one party city

Republicans have won city-wide in DC. Carol Schwartz was a perennial At-Large Council Member. It's Republicans own fault that they primaried her with a guy that could not win city-wide. David Catania won as a Republican and still could had the party not decided that gays are evil.

Much of the fault has to be put on the national Republican Party. Who wants to be associated with those clowns? They oppose DC statehood, they want to strip us of gun laws, they hate gays, and would replace DCPS with a voucher system. Yeah, that platform will win a lot of races in this city.

The last two Democratic mayor primaries have been won by non-establishment candidates. Fenty went from ANC commissioner to mayor in 6 years. What other political environment is a wide open at that? Williams won two terms, one as a write-in, and he didn't even own a home in the city. He may have never bothered to unpack his suitcases. Again, what other political environment is as open as that? Anyone of you out there could potentially be our next mayor if you wanted to be.

Hey, the Republicans are able to buy houses and pay DC rents just like anyone else! They can move in and build their party. It's not my responsibility to do it for them.

YOu must be kidding! These are some of the most Republican places in the nation.

Isn't that one party majority vote? Isn't Evanston, IL, even though this is the location of Northwestern University, overwhelmingly Republican?

I don't think Carol Schwartz or Catania's at large seat was as impressive, given that the Democrats could not nominate a candidate, as Schwartz's close finish the time she ran against Barry for Mayor.

Schwarz and Catania almost have to win given that one of the two folks elected in November have to be non-Democrats.

Ugh, sorry. Blew up what I was going to say.

The Democrats fielded candidates -- just that one non-Democrat has to win in the at-large race held every even #'d year.

I think Catania is up for re-election this year, it'll be him and Mendelson probably getting the nod in November.

Kwame Brown is going to be Council Chair, when will there be a special election for that at-large seat he has?

Too bad Fenty's not going to run for it. I really don't want to see it go to Orange.

Any Democrat can simply change his or her registration and run against them. That's what Michael A. Brown did. I am not sure he could have defeated Schwartz because many Democrats would have supported her over Brown. I know I would have and I know another frequent poster on this board would have as well. But, Brown easily defeated Mara. Similarly, Catania would be strong against most Brown-style independents.
