I'll start off by saying that I'm a semi-liberal Democrat (esp on the national stage) but I really wanted Mayor Fenty to run as a Republican in November. The reality is t hat in DC it's political suicide, this is a one party state and non Democrats or their ideas are never tolerated. There are no checks and balances and elections are decided by a very small group of people in this city. I feel like this is one of the reasons why we lag in the region in several measures due to this lack in diversity of political opinion. |
Sigh. That's what McLean, Great Falls, and Oakton are for. Oh, and Clifton especially. Repufflicans |
Why? Given the margin of defeat, how could Fenty beat Gray? This is pie in the sky fantasy.
Tons of places are one party and they run like a dream. DC's biggest problems are economic. |
Ok lets ignore the Fenty republican aspect since that isn't a reality. However, please tell me what other city in America is as one party as DC? Not NYC not La Not even Seattle. |
McLean, Great Falls, and Oakton are pretty bipartisan. Clifton is pretty blood-red though. Last year, the R unseated the D incumbent in the Great Falls/West McLean House of Delegates seat 54-46 or the such.

Isn't Philadelphia is overwhelmingly Democratic? |
Murder capital of the East coast. I rest my case. |
I understand the solid Republican Deep South has the highest crime rates among states. |
Have you looked at elections in any of those cities? There is a huge Democrat demographic in the Deep South. Elections are much closer than in DC |
Boston, Chicago, LA, Miami, and the list goes on. In this country we have a secret ballot and are allowed to vote for whomever we please, including write in candidates, or write in for Mickey Mouse, Deputy Dawg. The election is over so get on with your life. |
I wrote tons of places. Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan, Connecticut are practically one-party towns. |
Umm, Detroit anyone? |
Like Baltimore? |
YOu must be kidding! These are some of the most Republican places in the nation. |
Right, these are one party towns. Did we say which party. The topic is one party cities and towns.
I grew up in a town, population 100,000, that was one-third Democrat, one-third Republican, one-third unaffiliated. The two parties alternated controlling city hall, sometimes after one term, other times after several. |
