Is anyone (with CompTia and AWS certifications) having trouble landing an entry level IT job?

Tell him to start with a Help Desk position.

This or a Noc or SOC job.

Help desk is mostly offshored.

He could consider gig work through IT companies that contract techs. That's what my son did. There are multiple companies that recruit to service their clients. Eventually he turned to developing his own clients. This is independent contractor work and it can mean crazy hours, driving, etc. Could look at the lowvoltage sub in reddit if he wants to know more.

Otherwise NOC operations for businesses often do not require degrees.

To be honest, being willing to do hands on work is his best protection against his jobs being off-shored.

Yep. My employer (we did corporate IT support) went from 700 US employees to a couple of dozen between 2018 and 2022.

OP, example of what I meant by gig work: https://www.workmarket.com/
There's a link at the very bottom asking if you are an independent contractor.
What sucks is there are so many layers. Son had a preferred vendor agreement for field services in our region for a global company. Over last year they shed those vendors (no warning, just jobs decreased to a trickle then nothing then an email about changing our business model). They now contract with a company to manage tech contractors. Son's business managed to negotiate work with a 15% rate reduction from what they had with the original client, but after 6 months it was take another 30% off current rate and was told to kick rocks. And then payment is through another vendor so everyone slices the pie before you get it.

But if you're young and don't have business overhead that company still pays $60/hr.
Just scope out any companies on reddit or somewhere. One they worked with briefly and then no more--low pay, delayed pay, looked for any excuse to apply punitive "fines."

OP again- just want to thank everyone for your wonderful posts and ideas!

I recommend he go to CC and get a summer internship after his freshman year. This might give him the chance to roll into a FT job and not have to get a 4 year degree. He should look for a job that will clear him, which will govern him more options.

Read a little about H1B and OPT.

Democrats and DCUM love H1B and OPT even more. These programs are used by companies to replace US citizens with cheap foreign workers.

For example , OPT is a disgrace and Democrats kept expanding it under Biden.

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a work authorization program that was created entirely through regulation and not through congress. Any alien grad irrespective of merit or quality of their program qualifies for the work permit.

Employers are exempt from payroll taxes if they hire aliens on OPT.

It’s strictly a job displacement program where young American graduates are passed over in favor of foreign student graduates.

One suggestion: he could try and get a job in ‘office services’ or ‘conference services’ at a government contractor (particularly a defense one, many will clear all/most of their employees). The jobs aren’t glamorous - think restocking office supplies, setting up catering, cleaning workstations, showing people where to sit/go - but the people in these roles at my company often end up delivering and setting up monitors, keyboards, and other tech equipment, helping troubleshoot screen sharing equipment in conference rooms, etc.

Could be a good way for him to 1) get his foot in the door at a company that will clear him and 2) get some IT-esque ‘bullet points’ on his resume.

He could take the first couple CS classes at NOVA. They would transfer to any school..

But we are being told that there are no qualified Americans for these jobs - and somehow there are tons of college grads with IT or CS degrees unable to find ANY kind of tech work.
