It's not about free speech. It's about associating with and supporting a terrorist organization whose stated mission is to annihilate the Jews, and also the US and Western Civilization. Temples speak up about free speech all the time. There are plenty of free speech cases that Jews have spoken up for. This is not it. |

JFC why is it a Jewish responsibility to do this? i feel no need to go to bat for this guy. he sure would not be looking out for my rights. |

Might want to tell Chabad and Hasids and many conservative Jews who voted for Trump in the name of Israel. They discuss this every day all day and I would love to thank each and every one of this fools today Trump removed anything about the Holocaust from the Pentagon. As a Jew I will never forgive or forget anyone who calls themselves a Jew and voted for Trump. And yes they all push their agenda so do their board members |
Many Jews, including my rabbi, have spoken out against this arrest. And I’m glad they have. This case involving speech many people find repugnant or even offensive is EXACTLY what free speech is about. |
Because arresting a deporting someone who was here legally and who has neither been charged with nor convicted of a crime is a dangerous and slippery slope. It reminds me of the 1930s in Europe… and that should matter to Jews a lot. |
+1. It’s not about whether this other person would be looking out for my rights. We’ve already gone through the experience of no one looking out for our rights, and know what that leads to. That’s why I will always be the first to look out for other people’s rights. I know what happens no one does that. |
Another person here legally has been taken by ICE in the name of antisemitism. He appahas done nothing more than marry someone who is Palestinian American who has a father who was in Hamas long ago (and has disavowed 10/7). The detained Georgetown postdoc hasn’t done anything political.

The expectation that Jews speak to their “temple” is centering racist tropes about dual loyalties. Obama and Biden deported members of Punjabi separatist organizations and none of you cared at all. Just like none of you care at all about Palestinians being nailed to the cross in Syria and beheaded. Some of the visa and green card holders picked up by Trump lied on their immigration paperwork, attended Nasrallah’s funeral, attended Hamas gatherings, etc. Much more concerned about the woman deported to Laos for pot possession who has been in the U.S. since she was 8 months old. If you don’t like the immigration laws - should have voted for Harris and we would have had comprehensive immigration reform. But she wasn’t woke enough for you all. Don’t blame the Jews - we largely voted for her. And Muslims largely voted for Trump, just like they have done in every election except for Obama. Because they are social conservatives. I don’t see you telling Muslims to speak to their masjids about Trump policies. Interesting. |
I agree with most of this — it really should not be only Jews' responsibility to speak out against this, and our synagogues generally don't make public statements on political matters of any kind (though many rabbis do, and have). The alleged antisemitism as the ostensible reason for these deportations is also an example of people using Jews for political purposes. I will say, though, I don't agree with deporting the Brown professor, even if she did attend Nasrallah's funeral. |
Ehhhhh I half agree and half feel like we're several layers down into the "first they came for the socialists" poem. |

You are correct that it is not solely the responsibility of Jews or Jewish religious institutions to speak out, but this is an insanely dangerous moment for America and for Jewish Americans. Flagrant violations of the US Constitution are being justified as happening for the benefit of Jewish Americans. This Tweet is the most obvious iteration, but it's also clear in the way that DEI processes are being dismantled with a specific carve-out for DEI programs for Jewish folks. Now, we all understand that Jews are being used as pawns in an immigration crackdown Trump was going to do anyway, but I'm honestly afraid of the backlash when the bill comes due on all of this. |
