Yep, some of those or all are still much needed to function as an adult.

Which?
Fire safety and "independent living", maybe.

What topics do they or did they cover in independent living?

Maybe sewing? Taxes could be another, tho both can be outsourced and not a requirement for independent living. Cooking if you don't want to eat out or order meal prep.

Yes and use different settings, lol. many people dry clean clothes so ironing not required.

My son recently said he was tossing a shirt because the button came off. Sewing is still good! (I showed him how). Cooking also seems relevant. Metal shop less so

I miss my 1980s metal shop teacher, who had just a couple of teeth left by the time he taught us. He was also an on-the-road driver's ed teacher and would smoke while teaching me to parallel park.

And how many fingers?

SSIMS offers Family and Consumer Science as an elective option.

Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS)

FACS Grade 6/7 Do you want to learn how to manage your money, spend it wisely, and plan for your future? Through a project-based approach, students will be introduced to the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors associated with successful management of personal finances. Students will explore the benefits of making informed decisions; setting financial goals; using electronic banking and credit safely; creating a spending plan, and understanding values, needs, and wants. Hands-on activities and multidisciplinary projects in this unit are designed to be fast-paced and engaging as students get ready to take charge of their own personal finances.

FACS Grade 8 Students will learn basic skills using hands-on techniques. They will learn time management, food preparation and creative crafts. FACS incorporates a variety of interdisciplinary principles. Reading, writing, scientific principles, and math are an integral part of instruction and are used for the purpose of making connections between assessments, concepts, and laboratory experiences. Appropriate technology is used to access and process information, form conclusions and communicate results. Family and Consumer Sciences education empowers students with information and processes that assist them as they address the enduring concerns associated with living and working in a diverse global society.

My favorite courses at WJ in the 90’s were through home ec. I loved sewing and cooking! My absolute favorite was a course where we were given weekly challenges and had to plan our meals with a set amount of money, walk to Giant to purchase our ingredients, and then cook our meal. Mrs. Gunther was fantastic!

I wish every high school still had access to these very valuable classes!

They take Tech courses now or more Art and Music courses if they don't have Home Ec in HS.
