Gonzaga summer school for incoming freshman

Are the summer classes an additional cost, or are they included in the cost of tuition for freshman?

Thanks for all this helpful info. We are coming in from public so planned to have our son do the summer program just to get the feel for the difference in community/teacher-student relationship. Bonus about the Intro to I street, commute practice and understanding the campus. Am I reading it right there are two separate sessions? Is one session enough? Or do ppl recommend both?

Most kids do the summer program, even though it is technically optional. My kid did 3 sessions, but I think 2 would have been ideal for him. He met lots of new kids, and got comfortable with the Metro and the walk from Union Station. It's 4 weeks from late June to late July, so we did have to adjust summer plans, but I do think it's worth it.

My son did Intro and the writing one. Thought it was perfect. Coming from MCPS.

What would others recommend for a bright student (98th percentile on HSPT) as far as the summer classes go? Would love for him to meet other students before the school year gets antarted and become acquainted with school etc, however don’t want him to be bored out of his mind. Would it be okay to just enroll him in the intro one?

Bump on this thread and particularly the last post for high HSPT kids.

Most private HS have summer reading.

I talked to them at the event they had for admitted students a couple weeks ago. Basically, they encourage the Welcome to Eye St class for everyone. Helps the boys learn about the school/area and feel comfortable before classes start. They said the other more academic classes can’t hurt but were totally not necessary for my son (he got a 99 on the HSPT). My son ended up at a different school but I was only going to have him do the intro class had he picked GZ.

My DS who is at Gonzaga scored in the mid 90s on his HSPTs. He took the writing class and Intro to Eye Street. He thought the writing class was helpful and really enjoyed Eye Street. We scheduled the classes so that he had a lunch break in between and he thought that was a good way to meet some future classmates. My younger DS who will be a freshman at GZ this fall scored a few pointed higher than his brother and we plan to have him do the same or maybe Eye Street and the reading class. About 85% of the class does it, so lots of kids with high HSPTs take the classes.

A big reason for freshman summer classes is to meet other classmates and get used to things like the commute, the school culture, etc. A refresher on math and reading is just the cherry on top.

Curious where your DS decided to go?

My kid did Intro and writing. Coming from MCPS. High HSPT.

Thought it was great. Not a lot of grammar and no points off for spelling in MCPS, so it was helpful.

Coed independent. In the end, he decided against all boys. I was pretty sad, because I really like Gonzaga. But I let him decide.

My 99th percentile HSPT (Presidential Scholar) did three classes and enjoyed it. It gave him so much more confidence when school started because he knew a lot of kids walking in and had friends to eat lunch with day one. I don't think academically it gave him a leg up necessarily. He said a lot of it was review for him but it was still a good way to learn the campus and make friends. Plus, it forced him to do the summer reading early! Some of those kids he met during the summer programming are still his close friends.
