Families in this situation would need to get in touch with central office and their home school if the info has not come out yet at that point. Central office, however, may very well be timing this to provide info with the release of CES initial lottery results. |
PP again. Meant to add ... if families are in that position, I'd advise them to accept the CES slot, knowing that they can return to their home school at any time. They can give up the slot later in the spring/summer if they find out they'd prefer what their home school is offering. |
What type of "creativity" was in your program? |
I don't know. My kid has been really happy with both the ckla curriculum topics and then also getting to do a novel study as part of her elc enrichment. I do think she probably logs a lot of time reading books while she's waiting for her peer group to catch up for her |
My son went from hating writing to loving it. Especially likes creative writing. |
+1 - my kid wrote SO much in ELC in 4th, not so much with CKLA |
+1 Kid did more writing and work in ELC. Kid was much happier in class. And even with that and a cohort, the teacher admitted my kid and a couple of the other kids were ready to move ahead to MS level. They also did spelling and grammar, though they could have done some more. Can’t speak to how CKLA is as we’re done with ES, but I suggest parents and schools get VERY clear on the curriculum options and how they can be implemented. I wouldn’t recommend giving up ELC with info and plans. |
Same! I am a huge fan of the ELC program at my DC’s school. |
You should take the CES spot. ELC is good if it’s delivered with fidelity, but CES is still better. It wraps around to science and social studies. My middle schooler who did CES came in better prepared for those subjects in middle school compared to peers who did ELC and had spotty/limited coverage of those subjects in 4th and 5th. I am also reading between the MCPS lines and it’s obvious you are not going to be guaranteed ELC or cohorting or anything enriched or accelerated at the ES level. It seems like they are probably going to get rid of it, which is a huge shame. |
Just talked to our school. Title 1 (if that makes a difference). Said that MCPS paid a lot of money for CKLA and they will be doing that in place of ELC (but maybe with some ELC elements thrown in). Said that kids are grouped according to abilities, above grade level, grade level, below, etc. |
I had one kid get ELC with great teachers the older one suffered through benchmark and was supposed to get enrichment but got none. Guess which kid loves to read while the other one would never read a book for fun? |
Could you tell if central office told them they had to stop offering ELC, or if they had the choice to keep ELC but chose not to? (Getting ready for my convo with our school and want to be prepared.) |
I'm the PP. I spoke with a 4th grade teacher who is/was the ELA teacher. It sounded like it came from the principal (and maybe the principal got it from Central).
|
Well, I’ve seen first hand this year that the curriculum probably doesn’t matter if they put a craptastic teacher in the classroom. So I’d say that I don’t really care whether they keep ELC or not because it’s clear that we have bigger issues. Thanks, MCPS! Keep on with your gatekeeping of CES programs and watering down everything for everyone else. |
To me, creative writing is the last thing that schools need to be doing when kids don't have basic writing, grammar, spelling, etc. Creative writing is easy to do at home (not to mention that they will be doing a lot of this in middle and high school English classes.) |
