do high school kids use laptops?

In MCPS HS, as others mentioned all students are issues Chromebooks. Kids take them home at night. You do not need to make a purchase. However, at our HS the Chromebooks are old and the kids frequently complain. DS’s stopped working and so he started bringing in his MacBook Air rather than swap out the Chromebook. They often charge a damage fee when you bring them in for exchange even when they are really old. Eventually it will catch up to us unless they do a full scale replacement of all devices his senior year which we are hoping for. Anyway, if his still worked I would not send his MacBook Air because I worry about it being stolen or dropped and many teachers won’t allow exams on personal devices so he has to go sign out a Chromebook at times.

My DD has her own MacBook Air at home, but generally finds it’s easier to use the school-issued Chromebook for everything because of all the school-specific software and MCPS accounts.

This is not accurate. It depends on the school in MCPS. Some schools use a cart model where the Chromebooks always stay in the classroom on a cart and are distributed when needed. Only the kids who apply and have a need get to have a Chromebook at home for homework and that doesn’t travel back and forth to school.

Do high schools really use a cart model? I thought that was just for ES & MS.

No, they get their own and bring them back and forth.

Yes they do.
