do high school kids use laptops?

Anonymous
My daughter is in a private in 8th and will be going to public next year. Starting to think about what she will need and the transition....Her school provides laptops for the students. Do high school kids needs laptops and if so, what do most kids use? She'll be in MCPS.

You should post that in the MCPS forum. This is school specific.

Depends on the school.
But usually provided school computers are Chromebooks and not super great. We ended up buying my high schoolers their own laptops eventually, but might not be necessary as freshmen. It helped my adhd kid to have a school computer she kept at school and a home computer at home, so there wasn’t a forgotten device (they use google drive to save so this worked out really well)

Just use the school provided one for schoolwork. My DS also has a tower for games.

MCPS provides Chromebooks for high school students. They will be responsible for keeping it charged and bringing it to school every day.

My DD has her own MacBook Air at home, but generally finds it’s easier to use the school-issued Chromebook for everything because of all the school-specific software and MCPS accounts.

FCPS in VA also provides laptops for high schoolers.

I believe most public high schools nowadays provide laptops. it is not a "private school" thing!

Frederick County in MD not only provides laptops but requires that everyone uses the Chromebook they provide. So don't spend any money yet.

This is not accurate. It depends on the school in MCPS. Some schools use a cart model where the Chromebooks always stay in the classroom on a cart and are distributed when needed. Only the kids who apply and have a need get to have a Chromebook at home for homework and that doesn’t travel back and forth to school.

Wrong.
Did you see the title of this thread? High schools.

I don't think out MCPS HS allows students to use their own device at school.

But at home my kid "needs" their own computer to do work, because the school Chromebooks block a lot of programs they use to do work (video editors, research, stuff like that). He has a desktop gaming PC that works, and sometimes uses my MacBook Air. Will get a MacBook Air for college, or sooner if necessary.

At my kids school (Wheaton), he’s seen some kids using Macbooks instead of chromebooks and honestly, I can already see the trend. Most kids probably opt out from Chromebooks to use their own laptop since Chromebooks as some of them say are “bad”, and I don’t think its any surprise because it’s borrowed from the school…

Our school requires the MCPS Chromebook’s. We had bought our own and our child without our permission was issued a Chromebook.

Do high schools really use a cart model? I thought that was just for ES & MS.

No, they get their own and bring them back and forth.
