Rick Steeve's Europe Tours

One of my friends went on a Rick Steve's tour in Germany and Austria. She said they had to listen to the Sound of Music soundtrack and sing on one of the trips between cities. No thanks!

Might Odyssey Small Group Travel be a compromise?

Friends took one and really liked it. I think they are mainly for extroverts or people who want to spend their vacation “with company”. Personally I can’t think of anything worse than having to make small talk with strangers for a week plus.

You don't "have to" do anything you don't want to do in life. You know that, right? You can even stay back from the tour on certain days and go where you want to go on days that you take as "free". Tours are good for people who don't want to do a lot of planning or don't have time to plan (hotels, meals, transportation between sites, etc.). The pro of a tour is that you see a lot in a shorter time. The con is that if you like to control everything on your vacation, you cannot do that (for example the hotel, restaurants). Most tours build in free time and some tours have whole days of free time and only half days of touring so not all tours are the same. I would ask your friend to look at other tours besides Rick Steve's just for comparison.
