Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach are fantastic beach towns in LA - Shade Hotel in Manhattan is nice. |
For the Del, stay at one of the ocean front beach cottages. The main hotel is kinda run down |

Pasea Hotel in Huntington Beach. Great location and walkable to many places in the area. Next door to a great outdoor mall and eatery me in front of the beach. |
I like the montage best |
We vacation in SoCal a lot. For $700/night max (sleeping 4), it's going to be challenging. I just looked up several options that we've enjoyed in Laguna, Huntington, Coronado... and none were under $800/night. Yes, you can find a nice place, but being on/near the beach is going to be hard unless you go down to 2 stars. |
The La Jolla Shores Hotel has a great location right on the beach. It’s not super luxurious, but we loved staying there

We enjoyed our stay at The Seabird in Oceanside. |
Casa Tropicana is a small boutique hotel in San Clemente. No pool but right across from the pier and ocean |
I think Shutters is tired. On our last trip we stayed nearby at Santa Monica Proper and thought it was great. |
