My family / kids used to enjoy the area. However, they have put in lots of large houses for vacationers but have limited beach access to below the waterline if you don’t have a house in the beach or access to the beach in a community where access is explicitly stated with the rental. The other problem is there are red flags up most of the time. This apparenthas been attributed to dredging sand from a bit offshore to bring sand to the beaches and has resulted in riptides quite frequently making seimming and getting in ocean beyond your knees unsafe. |
What airport/airline does one fly from BWI? |
These beaches are great for people from Atlanta, Tennessee, Alabama & similar because they can drive there. If you are getting on a flight, there are so many other places to go and it really doesn't make sense. |
Thanks this is helpful. Sounds like kind of a regional winner not worth the flight. |
Rosemary beach is not conservative. It has a THRIVING gay scene.
Enjoy OP! |
Yes, this is a problem. You can go for a weeklong vacation and at best have a yellow flag one day. The beach is not ideal for kids with the riptides. |
I won't go to Florida and support the MAGA there.

ATLien here. I recommend looking at all the 30a beach towns and picking the right vibe. Rosemary Beach is one of the busier towns. |
I’m from Georgia and agree there are better beach towns to visit from DC. Rosemary Beach and 30A are beautiful, but have terrible traffic and crowds during the busy season. If staying within the US, I suggest to instead visit Anna Maria island or Clearwater beach. Longboat Key is very nice as well but more limited lodging options and not really walkable. If you really want to see the 30A area, I’d suggest basing yourself in Panama City Beach and do a day trip to the RB/30A area. PCB gets busy too but is not as congested as RB area. My family actually prefers PCB. If you just want a nice lowkey beach in the area and don’t care about walkability or attractions, you can visit: Pensacola Beach Navarre beach Perdido Key Orange Beach Gulf Shores Fort Walton beach |
DP, but my friends and I are planning a mom's trip there after our kids are back in school, right before Labor Day. It's in the middle for us coming from a few Southern states. (Southern states = kids go back beginning of Aug.) For those that have been:
1. Would you pick Rosemary or Watercolor? 2. Do we need to rent a car? Everyone is flying in. 3. Any particular recs for restaurants or other activities? TY! |
Get a big house as close to the beach as possible and make reservations earlier than later. Rent bikes a day or two, check on area events, buy seafood, go to Alice sp? Beach for lunch a couple of times, intentionally enjoy things at a slower pace. |
Our family loves Watercolor. Bike able , pet, friendly, walkable. Great beach club with multiple pools. Not cheap but a great getaway with beautiful homes. |
We are on 30A now for our first visit. Staying in a condo right on the Gulf between Seacreast and Alys beaches and about 1.5 miles from Rosemary Beach. This is our first time to the area. March is not a busy time (also not very warm) although spring breakers (both families and college students) are starting to show up this week. Beach is beautiful. No public beaches so no daytripers and everyone is staying in a condo, house, hotel, resort or neighborhood etc. that has beach access.
Restaurants and shops are good in Rosemary Beach -- but not enough restaurants for the number of people in the area. Can't imagine what it is like trying to park and dine during peak season. We like Galleon's, Cuvee, Pescado, and the Pearl Hotel's Havana Beach. We have enjoyed our visit -- but would probably come back later in March when temps are more consistently in the 70s. |
I don’t think Watercolor has close beach access. 15+ minute walk. |
Yes and the weather is drastically different than South Florida so do NOT go in Feb, March or April- too unpredictable. I do not understand the appeal in the summer given that it's hot up north and there are so many other places to go. |
