I don’t know that RN would work. But a medical assistant/LPN might - it’s usually nine months of training and a lot of skills like drawing blood without a lot of theory or medical terminology.

Also receptionist at a medical place- people skills are critical, but the job is mostly data entry and answering phones.

Well, what are they good at? If they are social and interact well with people, then sales or social services could be a good career. Like to travel? Steward on a cruise line or airline. Lots of options assuming we are not talking about severe impairment.

Nurse?

My DD is in college for nursing. She is currently taking Calculus, Anatomy, Chemistry, and Pharmacology…. all in one semester.

It’s a challenging courseload.

I was thinking CNA or LPN

How do you define low IQ though. I have a master's degree in pure math and people always say I am smart. I don't think I am particularly smart because don't ask me to read directions and put a toy for my kids it's too hard lol.

People should stop calling themselves low IQ.

This is why Trump is president. Because you think these trades are low IQ.

How low? 59 vs 99 could be a big difference. And what are subscores? All in the 70s vs some in 60s and some around 100 would really change the options.

I think aiming for something that pays 75k is the wrong strategy. Figure out strengths and work towards them. If the parents have some capital and can help kid open a business, sky is the limit. If IQ is low enough to consider disability benefits, make sure to see a benefits planner first because too much work early in life can make a kid ineligible for benefits on his parents earnings record. And that could be tens of thousands of dollars a year for life.

Retail - start as full time staff and work their way up to store management. Either the big box stores like Walmart, or big department stores. Restaurant management too in busier/higher end restaurants with a bar. Some of the trades would be ok. They should try to get into it through the military if they’re eligible to join and open to it. Auto body repair shops - we’re not getting into any fewer car accidents as a society even if car technology will eventually favor electric vehicles.

With someone else handling schedules, taxes, and the like.

Nanny? Car detailing? Petsitting? Waiter at fancy restaurant? To make over 6k a month would require a lot of hustle and probably multiple jobs but isn't impossible. The challenge would be the executive function to get the work and keep track of all of it.

Some of the responses here are absurd and shows how much career snobbery so many people have.

If they are disabled, the DORs program in Maryland helps with job placement. If you are just calling this person low IQ without a diagnosed disability, definitely try President of the US or simply ask the person what they think they want to do.

I have a child on the autism spectrum who has a high IQ but is disabled. He has successfully been employed at a grocery store for 2 years and is attending college for graphic arts. He is disabled but capable.

And lord help any of these posters if they get sick and need a CNA or LPN. They are amazing and smart people (in general, obviously) who play a pivotal part in our crappy healthcare model.

Low IQ and a job that pays over 75k??

Political appointee?
Congressman
Mayor of NY

I would focus on completing a community college program for a trade and becoming a skilled professional, if possible, to earn over 75k.

These are not jobs for someone low IQ nor are they jobs for someone with low educational attainment nowadays.

You can't just "work your way up to store management" through hard work from the bottom in retail at a big box or large chain department store if you don't have the IQ. That's because being management requires a knowledge of finance, HR, operations, etc.

It's also become a "4 year degree" job. Other than some 2 year degree in business holders, you don't see people in store management at the big chains without a bachelor's anymore. Many of the bigger chains will make you go through extensive testing and courses in addition to that if you want to be considered for store management, which makes sense.

In larger/higher end restaurants, you also need financial skills, and more and more it is a job that requires a degree.
