That's just rude, PP. Didn't you see that her DS has a loose tooth, so he can't eat it whole? Sheesh!

Our kids have teeth to bite into them.

Congrats - my kids have teeth, too. But they really like apple slices. If slicing it gets them to eat an apple, it's worth 2 minutes of my time to slice it up. If I put a whole apple in the lunchbox, it usually comes back home.

I suppose when they go to college, they'll be the only kids in the dorm who don't know how to eat a whole apple . . . .

Does your DC care if they turn brown? My DD doesn't seem to mind so I haven't been doing anything. But slicing them the morning of and keeping the slices all together (touching each other) helps.

Plus the kids don't have time to eat a whole apple, so either I can save half in the fridge for afternoon snack, or they can throw out a half eaten apple at lunch.

FWIW, my kid actually likes the lemon flavor-- it's not too tart at all for him.

I have found that the Glad Wrap is REALLY good at keeping apple slices from browning...

You guys are really sweet to put this much care into apple slices. I mean that sincerely, not snarkily.

I'm going to try some of these techniques, too -- I feel bad because I've just been cutting up a pear for my son and he never eats it b/c it turns brown by lunch -- never thought to do all of this.

I posted about the lemon-and-water mixture. I use about a tablespoon lemon juice to 1/2 cup water, but I never really measure it. My kids have never said the apple slices were too tart. I keep a bottle of reconstituted lemon juice in the fridge; I don't cut a fresh lemon for this.

FRESH LIME JUICE- I just tried it today. Not only do the applies not turn brown, it's yummy!

Got this idea in an email newsletter today...slice the apple, put it back together, and then wrap a rubber band around it. I would personally clean the rubber band before putting it around the apple. It seemed like a neat, simple solution.

i just squirt a little bit of my el cheapo bottled lemon juice into the baggie with the apples and rub it around so most of the fruit gets touched by it. it seems to work pretty well.

my japanese mother always just rinsed the slices in a bowl of water with a little bit of salt in it to keep the slices
from going brown. not sure why, but it always worked.

This is a great tip! Thanks, apple-slicing moms.

Honestly, I don't do anything but put the apples in my kids laptop lunchboxes. At 8pm tonight I emptied the lunchboxes that I packed at 7:30 this morning and there were several uneaten apple slices and they weren't brown at all. I think packing them in the box helps keep air from circulating around the apples and turning them brown.

I read somewhere that Pink Lady apples stay fresher longer than other varieties. ie they don't brown as easily.
