The calendar proposals for 2026-2029 would start school a week earlier in August so we don’t run into the Juneteenth issues. This would also align better with college breaks, since they staff summer camps |
This is the way it used to be, before Ferebee arrived. School started two weeks before Labor Day and was out by June 15. We’ll be out of DCPS in 2026, but it’s great they’re returning to this. |
August 2028 starts on August 14 for teachers, August 21 for students a full week earlier than 2023. They need to deduct 2 PD days and have school on PTC days. As for adding days to the end of the year no matter when it ends going into a new week is undesirable and no one will want that. |
It maybe ok in 2026 and 2027 but beyond that it gets to be too early. August is very hot so starting earlier doesn't extend summer it just changes the start and end times. |
So do we still not know when the school year ends? |
Yea idk, but trying to plan family visits and summer camps is insanely annoying without this info. |
The unnecessary angst. School ends June 13. Plan away. |
Not sure I follow. You sound like you might be from Texas, so perhaps I'm missing something? |
Did anyone see this article, I can’t find it |
Yes of course.
|
That’s the point. Changing the start and end times, not avoiding hot weather or extending the summer. |
How exactly do you propose having school on PTC days? Subs for the entire school except for maybe the specials? |
Except it doesn't, and the minute I plan to go spend that week at my ILs, we'll find out there's some kind of special event/activity on actual last week of school and my kid will be devastated to miss it because "everyone will be there" and suddenly I'm a jerk for not sending my kid that week. Also, because it's DCPS, they will 100% mark kids who aren't there that week as unexcused absences and if you have racked up any other unexcused absences during the year, you'll start getting the threatening letters about CPS. I'd love if if June 13th were actually the last day of school, but it's not. Sorry to the teacher who will wind up having to deal with the stupidity of having kids in class that week. |
Agree, this was stupid last year too. They dropped wi there real and kids are still going late into June |
Last day is now Wednesday, June 18. See the new note on this page: https://dcps.dc.gov/publication/school-year-2024-2025-calendar |
