Question for those outraged about funding cuts

why doesn’t Harvard and others open up their coffers? Harvard has how much? $53 BILLION??? Maybe it’s time these greedy institutions start using their money to offset possible increases in tuition?

For every 1 letter you send to Congress, send 20 to Harvard and the others.

What is the indirect cost rate for SpaceX? Inquiring minds want to know.

Please go read up on how endowments work. This isn’t like your household budget that you can allocate as you see fit and change on a whim.

These people are a lost cause. They only know how to parrot a talking point

OP is correct. And his point is most effectively argued from the left, not the right. More Perfect Union (partially funded by Soros) has a piece on this.

^PP again. The bottom line:
"In 1978, Harvard University had a $1.4 billion endowment and admitted 2,200 incoming students.

In 2023, the endowment sits at $50.7 billion—with 1,942 students admitted. That’s a 3,521% increase to their endowment and a 12% decrease to their admissions. And the same is true for the rest of Ivy League."

What would be an appropriate endowment to you? For a private company with international presence, it’s a tiny amount of money

You realize a lot of state schools that don't have Harvard endowments also get research funding right? You can't use "Harvard" as the basis of comparison to make policy. You need to use the average school that gets them.

Also, as others have said read up on endowments, you can't just use them for whatever you want in most cases. If a donor wants their millions going to the arts you can't then allocate it to scientific research.

Because just like churches and religious institutions it is considered non-profit and exempt from tax.

I'm not MAGA. At all. I'm not the OP. But Harvard is hoarding wealth in opposition to its stated and historical mission. You can't be so starry-eyed about ivy league schools that you don't call them out for this insane hypocrisy.

I'm not sure what your point is here, a school like Columbia has no place to really expand into in terms of dorms so they can't really have a massive increase in admitted students because there is no place to put them. Also more students = more teachers = more offices = more classrooms. They are pretty defined in terms of their space available.

If you're going to ask the universities, don't forget to also ask the churches that same question.

I'm the poster you're replying to and yes, agree 100%.

Why would I write to Harvard? My kid isn't going to go there. My kid is going to go to a school with a much, much lower endowment that will be really harmed by these cuts in funding. And his tuition might go up.

Harvard is a red herring and you know it. If you want to try to justify what this MAGA admin is doing, try something else.

Eh I'm no Harvard stan but it's their money that was donated by someone for a specific purpose. Unless that purpose is "admit more students" then they need to follow the wishes of the donor.

Thinly veiled MAGA attack on the universities. Existing system works well, no reason to change except your irrational hatred for excellence.

Yep. We're going to have an efficient country with 0 innovation. Sounds great for our competitiveness on the global stage.

You would think Musk would care about remaining innovative. Oh wait, he’s never actually created anything of his own.
