“Safe” Federal positions

Procurement attorney for DoD and feel reasonably but not entirely safe.

I do immigration enforcement and fear for my job (not an ICE agent). They want to replace us sane attorneys with diehard zealots. The job will exist but it may well be done by other people.

Nothing is safe any more. All I have is my outstanding performance rating for the past few years and I am praying that will save me from immediate threats

This same statement could apply to so many agencies. Look at the cuts focused on fed health agencies, just as we skirt the brink of another pandemic…

I wish you well, but what you describe (core function, no fat) isn't unique. It just comes down to whether Trump or Musk see you as an enemy. I would have thought everybody in DOJ saw that up close.

There are only 6000 AUSAs and the overwhelming majority prosecute a mix of violent street crime, drug distribution, gun, child exploitation, and immigration offenses. I don’t see Trump or Musk coming at us.

Obviously those who have worked on high-profile cases unpopular with this administration (J6, FACE Act cases) are differently situated.

Elon, a couple of days ago, told an event of JP Morgan's 200 largest clients that he intends on cutting 3/4 of the federal workforce.

Plan accordingly.

And just as obviously that points the way to other prosecutions to later be disfavored, and the people who worked on them fired and replaced by political appointees.

I hope it doesn’t happen. But no one can afford to be complacent.

He thinks most jobs are either not needed or can be done by machine or AI. No doubt that is true for some things, but good luck finding machines that can fight fires, provide medical care, interpret and apply laws in a way that will withstand review in court, provide physical security for borders and buildings, conduct scientific trials and studies, etc.

Elon thinks all government jobs involve stamping requests or pressing y/n on claims.

Well, that means your job won't be RIFed and they would have to fire you for cause Hang in there. It's miserable, of course, but if you can stand it and continue to do your job well and on-site, you will be ok.

WTF?! I say this as someone who thinks we could pare down the gov. a little bit, I admit there is a lot of fraud waste and abuse but 75% is insane and will collapse the county. This would be catastrophic.

I wish I could get citizenship in another county right now.
