No one is saying it is not his right. They are saying he is a hateful, ignorant bigot whose deeds conflict with his role as a christian pastor.

Exactly. "Free speech" means that he should be able to burn the Koran as long as he follows the regulations for open fires in his community -- just as people should be able to burn the flag if they feel like it. But "free speech" doesn't mean that he can say whatever he wants without people criticizing him. It is my free speech to call him an attention-mongering asshole!

Part of free speech is criticism but when you call him names it becomes a personal attack and this angers his supporters and you are making a bad situation worse.

I'm not sure I care what his supporters think or about the fact that PPs statements are a personal attack. Though, in general, you are right and I agree with what you say. But it is difficult with a person like this.

The point of the first amendment is to create a "marketplace of ideas", where some ideas thrive and some do not. But if we are restricted in our criticisms, then it is a one way system, where outrageous attacks on a people are permitted yet the response must be contained by politeness. And it becomes more like a "support group for nutjobs"

Personal attacks should be kept to yourself because they serve no purpose other than to incite anger and other dangerous reactions.
