LOL shows how clueless they are. The maximum Pell grant is $7,395, well below the median cost of college attendance, with the exception of community colleges. It would actually be great if they increased Pell grants to match the median cost of attendance for a bachelor's degree. |
This isn’t true even if you totally ignore subgroups and just look at the NAEP top line. And the biggest federal intrusion into local control of schools (excepting students with disabilities) in recent memory is Trump’s curriculum EO from a week ago. Any Republican who actually cared about local control would be losing their mind over that EO. This poster is not arguing in good faith. |
| I think we all know that Pell grants will be reduced or eliminated if the committee is given the authority--that language is just cover |
|
The Pell Grant, was known as the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant (BEOG), when I applied in 1979 the average BEOG grant covered 75 percent of tuition.
Pell Grants stink, DOE is huge bloat and the grants cover way less the cost of tuition. Get rid of DOE you have more money for grants |
That authority would have to come from Congress, which isn't going to happen. |
|
Eventually, they will get rid of it because it helps poor people.
They do not want educated people. They do not want to help the poor. |
A lot is happening without authority from Congress if Musk wants it to happen. Musk is ignoring orders from judges. |
Good for you! Standing up for the “better results” that you get with a college student population that’s mostly white, mostly male, mostly wealthy, and mostly coddled. How exactly are you defining “results” though? Your own “historical awareness” seems to be quite limited, but perhaps you like it that way. |
Have you been watching the news? USAID is gone! EPA is on notice. Ed is under total attack. (the list goes longer BTW) All this needs congress but no Republican in congress will dare standup. The courts are the only ones stopping it which is technically a legislative decision. Good bye student aid for 2 years. |
MAGA are not in the reality-based community. |
This. It is just "politics as theatre". |
| The Pell Grant program was established in 1972, and the Department of Education was established in 1979. So, if the Dept of Education was abolished, which it won't be.... but if, the Pell Grant won't go away, as it pre-dates the Dept of Education. |

K-12 education. But you knew that |
This is simply not true. From NAEP long term trend data for 9 year olds: The average scores in LTT reading and mathematics for 9-year-olds in 2022 were higher than the earliest assessments in the 1970s, but lower compared to the previous assessments in 2020. The 2022 reading score for 9-year-old students was 7 points higher than 1971, but 5 points lower than 2020. The 2022 mathematics score for 9-year-olds was 15 points higher than 1973, but 7 points lower than 2020. NAEP long term trend data for 13 year olds: The average score in LTT reading for 13-year-olds in 2023 was not statistically significantly different from 1971 and was 4 points lower compared to the previous assessment in 2020. The average LTT mathematics score for 13-year-olds in 2023 was 5 points higher than in 1973, but 9 points lower than 2020. https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/ltt/?age=9 |
