14 y/o DS worried about shower situation at camp

Anonymous
Get him a bag for his clothes that can be hung on a hook. If there's no hook he can set it just outside the shower. So he goes into the stall dressed with his towel in hand. He undresses and wraps the towel around, then he steps out and hangs up the clothes. Then he goes back in, takes off the towel and hangs it over the bar, showers, dries off, and wears the towel to grab the clothes. Then he gets dressed in the stall.

Learning to problem solve things like this is the great benefit of going to camp! You have to give him time and space to figure it out. And yes he can just keep his swim shorts on the whole time if he prefers.

He doesn't have to get over anything. Every problem has a solution.

At least the showers are separate. Just send him with a terrycloth robe. Not hard

My boys have both attended traditional camps and the showers are private. Kids wear clothes to the shower and undress inside. At one son’s camp do not even change in the bunks—only in the bathrooms privately. It is way different than a generation ago.

I would ask for details but there is zero nudity at my kids’ camps. Probably a liability thing plus changing norms.

This is what we did say a camp with open showers years ago.

Did you read the OP? She specifically said she suggested that to him and he said he was uncomfortable even with that

My son was bullied in an isolated incident in the changing room at a summer camp here in Montgomery County. The boys were changing out of swim suits and back into their regular clothes and a kid started teasing my son and pulled his towel away, leaving him naked. And he couldn't get to his clothes. He was about 7 at the time. There were no camp counselors in there because they were all women/teen girls.

It was isolated but it left an impression and my son would be concerned as a teen in the same type of situation.

I’m so sad this happened to your son. It’s easy to understand why he would be uncomfortable in changing rooms and showers after that.

I did read and just reread the OP.
She didn't mention a robe, just a towel which even I would be uncomfortable with.

You’d be uncomfortable walking to the shower with a towel wrapped totally around you?

Yes, it doesn't feel as secure. Maybe because it isn't

what drives this fear of nudity as an adult?

I'm a 50 year old mom and I honestly don't give 2 craps if a group of people see a glimpse of me naked. It's just a human body, no?

This. He's just going to have to figure it out. Especially if he plans on playing sports in high school.

Nobody showers at school anymore after sports. I don’t think kids are allowed to.

Can you get him a robe?

Do you not at all remember being a teen?

Yes I do. And we showered full nude in those multi head showers with no curtains or stalls. No one cared and if they did, they just got over it.

This kid has a shower IN HIS CABIN with its own stall and curtain. He won’t even walk the 10’ft to the shower with a towel on. I’d offer to get him a towel robe, but that’s about it. He can figure this out or get over it.
