I agree apartment therapy, Pinterest and houzz are good for pretty pictures and ideas. I do remember the early 2010s heyday of blogs. They were just amazing. |

YES this is a lot of it. Everything now is exactly the same - beige, greige, modern farmhouse, maybe some rustic stuff, but all of the influencers are fed by the same companies that literally send them lists of products to choose from, so of course they all look the same. |

| You might try YouTube. I don’t have any specific channels to recommend, but you can find longer videos than TikToks that will consequently go into more depth. They have videos on every subject (including home improvement and decorating) at every level from expert to hobbyist to complete novice. |

These days, anyone who isn't monetizing is gatekeeping. Go to any random FB group around parenting, fashion, whatever. People are constantly hounding others for information while disclosing nothing of use to others. |

Me too! I used to love Emily Henderson but all she does now is hawk everything under the sun and her focus turned to collecting material goods. I started to follow one young woman redoing her kitchen. She had this impressive set up of construction equipment and tools. But then every 15 minutes of video she’d break into a sales pitch for some cheesy makeup brush that had nothing to do at all with DIY, remodeling or construction. It was bizarre! |

| Everyone is hawking their favorite Amazon products these days. I guess it’s the only way they make money. Either accept the product link or goto the website yourself if you want to purchase. Sometimes, I approach my individual dilemma from google. For example, how to update a brick fireplace and then, you can sift thru the hits. |

NP and I miss blogs too, not about being free. I’ve had magazine subscriptions over the years and there is “platform decay” (as another PP termed it) there too. There is lack of variety and most content even in magazines is just add and shopping. Even interviews tend to be ads or shopping related. I miss more interesting content. |

As a DIY type person, I can’t imagine how much time it takes to document each project with photos, measurements and steps explaining every aspect. Some bloggers will add in where they had mishaps/mistakes and how they handled it. Hats off to the good ones.

In the movie the Truman show Truman is talking to his wife and she randomly starts hawking products in the kitchen and he is like “wtf is going on?” because he doesn’t know his whole life is a sham. We are all Truman now. |
