| Why doesn’t he apply for a junior year abroad program? He might just need a change of scenery? He could go for a semester or for the entire year. |
| New college, new issues. It’s hard to remedy abstract issues like peer group, easy to remedy issues Like there being no architecture program or small department. |
| Would it work for his major to go abroad junior year instead? Then he just has senior year left. |
Oh also. If he chooses a program other kids from his school go on, he might make friends he could hang out with senior year. |
| There is no reason someone wouldn't make friends as a junior. Just like high school, junior and senior year are often when students separate out as those who are more serious, more wiling to branch out and meet others not like them, etc. Also, rush can be easier (at least for sororities) as a junior than as a sophomore. If he really feels like he isn't happy, why not transfer to somewhere with more kids like him. More bohemian - maybe a school in Colorado? |
Interesting that he is at a mid-sized school with a serious girlfriend at this school yet he still wants to transfer. Certainly fine to transfer to a large state flagship university where he can start over socially and enjoy anonymous moments when he prefers to do so. I attended a largish LAC for my undergraduate years and a large state flagship for my grad schools years. Hated the smallness of the over 2,000 student LAC and its lack of diversity; enjoyed the large state flagship during my grad school years. I handled the undergraduate years by studying abroad and by graduating a year early, but still retain distasteful memories of my undergraduate time spent on campus at the LAC. Transfer. It will be a new adventure in a different campus culture. No need to languish in an unsatisfactory environment which must be pretty bad if he is unhappy even with a serious girlfriend at his current school. I do wish that you would share more info about his current school because you might be surprised at what other posters have experienced and are willing to share. And I disagree with the poster who asserted that it is wrong to transfer based on an I'll fitting social/campus culture. Transfer. |
This sounds like the way to go to me. And if he really wants to get out of dodge, he could take classes this summer and next then graduate early (a whole year early would be hard but a semester early should be doable) |
