| I downloaded all of my content today and am planning on deactivating. Crazy after 20 years. The main thing I will miss is the neighborhood and community groups. |
Unfortunately, Facebook and Insta are from the same company. So if there's no fact, checking on Facebook, there'll be no fact checking on Insta. I am not happy because that's why I keep track of some people. I'm not close to. But fortunately, I never got my news from these sites. |

I don’t go on to scroll. I m in a few groups that use Facebook. If they move elsewhere, so will I. I do the friends feed once or twice a day to see what my friends are posting- that seems to keep the crap to a minimum.
I have never been on insta, twitter or tictoc. |

If you think Facebook censored past elections, you need to watch The Great Hack. I run Facebook ads for a living and courses I’ve taken go over what Trump did in 2016. They harvested data from millions of Facebook users without consent and used it to build psychological voter profiles. Then, they ran tens of thousands of ad variations per day to see which messages triggered the strongest emotional reactions. And it’s not just Trump. Right-wing organizations use a ton of what’s called microtargeting. Facebook tracks everything you do—what you like, what you comment on, what you read, even what you pause on momentarily. Advertisers use this data to target people based on their fears, insecurities, beliefs, etc. Not just in politics - also health and wellness, finance, etc which is why there’s such a strong pipeline from health, finance, and relationship content to conspiracy theories and far-right ideologies. Political groups—especially the ones on the right—take this even further with A/B testing. Let’s say they’re targeting 50- to 60-year-olds who subscribe to a certain health magazine. They won’t just run one ad. They’ll test 20+ different versions of the same message, tweaking the wording, images, and headlines to see which one gets the most clicks. Zuckerberg had to testify before Congress over all of this. Facebook made a few surface-level changes—fact-checking partnerships, stricter data access—but Facebook made over $800 million from political ads in 2020 alone. It’s one of their biggest revenue streams. With Trump back in office and the protection he’ll provide, there’s zero chance they’ll enforce the same restrictions, because regulation isn’t good for business. Political campaigns dump massive amounts of money into Facebook ads, and Facebook isn’t about to turn that down. I’m guessing FB will basically become a right wing propaganda machine. A lot of people don’t realize how much they’re being played. The combination of microtargeting, A/B testing, and psychological profiling makes it WAY easier to manipulate voters. Facebook is basically a data-harvesting machine that fuels the most effective propaganda campaigns we’ve ever seen. And now with the Trump-Zuck partnership, it’s going to get much worse. There’s tons of other marketing tactics the right uses - like Trump issued older people a Trump Card in exchange for donations because psychologically, that demographic is used to carrying cards for things like AARP. Fox News uses the bright colors and sound effects the exact same way TikTok videos do, to keep people watching and in a stage of fight or flight so they’ll buy more products. It makes me so sad, because I do use my expertise to help legitimate businesses owned by good people make money, and now FB is going to become just another propaganda tool like X did. After they shut TikTok down, most social media will be controlled by the same 2 people who have strong ties to Trump. Very very scary. |
| Does anyone know if it makes much difference having a very low use account vs cancelling altogether? I almost never use it - maybe a couple times a year for posting something for free on the marketplace. Am I contributing to their bottom line even if I’m not generating any ad revenue/clicks? Or do I need to fully deactivate? |
| Just yesterday I saw a FB post saying that Elon tried to buy a college football team I follow, and was mad when rejected so he was starting his own college FB team. Honestly he is so crazy it could be true. I didn’t know what to believe, so I googled it. Was the first time I’ve seen blatantly fake news on my feed, so really considering it. |
What was the psychological profile? How interesting. They'll vote against they're own best interests in order to own the libs? |
+1 My family has a Facebook account only so we can log into a few sites. But we have never posted anything. Same for me personally on Twitter/X. Social media is incredibly toxic and it's worse now that Elon is using X as a propaganda tool to help Trump. |
He is morphing into Musk and Meta products will soon morph into X. I deleted my FB and Threads before this announcement in his cringy mid-life crisis outfit, but I think I am keeping IG. Probably the least harmful of the Meta products at the moment. |
| The only stakeholder that matters more to Meta now than Trump is its shareholders. If people quit en masse, that will hurt ad sales and earnings. Musk didn’t have to deal with that. Zuck does. |

I wonder if this is already a thread in the Political forum?
