My mom is like that and I wish I knew the word. She's sort of an emotional vampire and only feels things if they're at a great remove from her, and feels happiest if she has something bad to think about.

Ugh I work with someone like this. Always sharing news links of unfortunate stories with “this is so sad .” Makes herself a victim constantly. Makes sure if she knows anything about anyone going through something rough that YOU know that SHE knows because she’s just so connected to bad and sad things. It’s so annoying.

No, this isn’t it at all. This means you’re happy about someone’s misfortune. This person is legitimately depressed about it. It’s not fake

That’s just spiraling and depression.

They need to stop themselves from wallowing and ruminating and physically go do stuff, like work out, walk, visit with friends, go out to eat, volunteer, nature hike, etc.

Interesting. This person seem to get very depressed over things that have little to nothing to do with them



Depression has become a comfortable state for them so they unconsciously look for things to reinforce and justify that state. It's also an anxiety thing, I believe.
