Have you considered Huntsville instead? If your DS has any interest in space, rockets etc. this would be a better choice IMO.

The art museum is lovely and free. I found it the quality surpassed my expectations. I enjoyed my visit to the Vulcan statue as well. It has a great view of the city.

I went to Birmingham on the recommendation of the NY times 52 places from a couple of years ago. Don't let people dissuade you. Visiting different cities is good for kids and gives them perspective.
