DC Council passed it without doing an Environmental Impact Assessment. |
| Right turn on red is mankind’s greatest achievement. Shame to get rid of it. |
| Now hopefully Peds don’t walk when it says don’t in the crosswalks |
| Does DC even pull people over? |
Hahahahahahahaha good one. |
Right turn on red was a test for our society. Are you able to follow the rule? Do you actually come to a stop before turning? (No) Will you yield to cars or pedestrians that have the right of way? (No) Well, we failed and they took it away. It's frustrating because I am a rigid rule follower when it comes to driving (Prius alert!) but like to get where I'm going so I'm annoyed when right on red is not allowed. |
You could say that for a lot of traffic rules, like don’t cruise in the left lane on the highway. And forget it with cyclists, there’s no laws they abide by. |
That was never legal in DC. The law on left turns on red vary from state to state, and most states allow it, but DC never allowed it. |
DC definitely had left on red at some one way streets. I remember it well. |
| The city needs to adjust the timing of the red lights. The measly amount of green light time that is given to the right-turner is used up by the pedestrians who are crossing at that moment. Then there’s no time left for the poor car to turn right and the car must sit through another cycle of the lights and the whole problem repeats. |
So, your solution is for cars to race pedestrians to see who can get into the crosswalk first? Pedestrians would still have the right of way. |
| I was in DC this past week and turned right on red it was confusing because some intersections have no turn on red signs and most don't. are they going to put no turn on red on all signs or take the signs off as the law is no turn on red? really odd |
Enforcement remains only at intersections with no right on red signs. The budget wasn’t allocated for additional signs and so they can’t enforce at those intersections. |
| It’s a good thing. It was fine when there were less cars, less pedestrians. I cross an intersection that has a red arrow on right turn for cars to give chance for pedestrians to cross, a while 12 seconds, and even so, at least once a week (and I commute 2-3 times) a car turns on the red arrow while pedestrians are crossing. As a driver, I love the option to turn on right, but often drivers look left to see if there are oncoming traffic and don’t pay enough attention right to watch for pedestrians. |
| K st is even less fun now. |
