We just renovated our kitchen and put in two islands. Our kitchen designer recommended it because one island would've had to be way too big to fill the space. We love it. One is a work island with a four foot long Galley sink, dishwasher and the cooktop all in a long row. It really works well. The second island is a serving space with seating. We have a lot of parties and the flow works great. The islands provide TONS of storage with all drawers. We also have a separate eating space with our table and chairs.
If you have a large space I highly recommend two islands. |

Since the provided image was referenced, I think that set-up is actually quite functional. The 48" range takes up the bulk of its wall with a full-height refrigerator and freezer on the adjacent wall. That working island is not terrible wide but will handle the bulk of the work-load in the kitchen so the second island is going to be the primary gathering spot.
Is it a bit much for a small family? You bet. Would it work quite well for a large, busy family + friends... definitely. |
| I honestly think it looks stupid to have two. Even worse when they don’t even match. |
Similar setup for us. We had two islands before our reno and chose to keep them. The setup works well for a square shaped kitchen, which is what we have. A single island would have been massive and impractical. The rear island has a prep sink, dishwasher and trash pullouts. It is opposite the range, oven, and more prep space. The front island has refrigerated drawers and seating. The main sink is along the wall that runs perpendicular to the two islands with trash pullout and another dishwasher. The biggest advantage to two islands is multiple task areas and easy flow of traffic. During parties, we have two workspaces - prep island and main sink. And one hangout space - the front island. We can have a few people cooking, a few people putting dishes away, and the rest hanging out, and no one has to scoot past anyone else. We had 50 people over recently, and 20 of them were hanging out in the kitchen easily. |
