Kitchen double island - yes or no?

Anonymous
Have a very old but considerably large kitchen to be renovated. Would you do a double island layout like this?

No I think it looks like a mid tier hotel lobby. Do a nice big table instead. Break up the eyeline.

No looks like a commercial space

The thing is that these giant kitchens usually have a dining area and a “keeping room” or whatever attached to them so the only solution is more islands.

And honestly it’s fine and pretty useful.

I would rather have a banquet sized table in that spot than a second island. I think that would be more versatile as an all-purpose work surface and you can change it later if you get tired of it.

Same! Don’t put in a second island. Instead, use the space for a large table and chairs.

Looks like there is a morning or breakfast room with a dining table behind the islands

We went to a party at a house that had this. Terrible. Not good for flow at all.

Yes and I turned my "keeping room" into an additional casual reading area with a custom designed sofa to wrap around the corners of the room. Works perfectly with a small round table for my kids homework and additional cocktail area when hosting our large family. It does not have to be used as a "keeping room" or a breakfast table area.

quare feet. So I think the double island works for that house because they have space for a separate dining room table. Not sure how large your house or kitchen area is more specifically but something that you should take into consideration.

Also, the first island doesn't seem to have an indentation where people can eat, only the 2nd island. That would annoy me because you would always have to walk over to the 2nd island to serve people food. It would be nice to have an indentation on both.

Just a couple observations.

As for my 2 cents, if I had a big kitchen space, I think I would like to have 2 islands - with indentations!

My house is about 6500 square feet. The floorplan is an open layout one. Kitchen is currently a peninsula layout and feels a little cramped at the moment

Famous kitchen person Nancy Meyers has two kitchens in her own house. You can see there’s already an informal table in the same space and presumably a formal dining room elsewhere. It’s definitely a thing for big houses only. It’s useful for parties.
