SMU? Really?

I would not describe Dallas as "very liberal".

Agree. School tour evaporated so many preconceptions about the school and academics and stunningly pristene and gorgeous campus.
They also gave the best swag of any tour - I think we got little backpacks!

SMU really is a caricature of itself. I'm guessing rich parents can find jobs for the rich kids graduates. But certainly is a unique place.

Last year, while going on college tours, DS definitely loved the campus most, but me and DH are very concerned about job prospects of going to a non-elite school like SMU. DS definitely fits the student body profile, I have to admit. But there's something about this choice that is very disappointing.

Thanks for the post troll. If not a troll, sheltered.

It is a solidly blue place. Not really Dallas's fault that Texas surrounds it.

A higher percent of people in Dallas voted for Kamala than people in New York. Seems fairly liberal to me.

Be less concerned about what others think and more concerned with what your son thinks. He’s the one who will be living with his decision and he’s making it. If money is not an issue (which I assume since he applied ED to Dartmouth) respect his choice.

SMU is strong academically and leads to great career options. The problem for me, as someone with several family members and friends who attended and now friends with kids who attend, is their drug culture is next level. Coke is as prevalent at SMU as beer is at other schools. I know kids who were goody-goodies in HS, who would be the last one you’d think would try drugs, go to SMU and start dabbling in hard drugs. DS’s psychiatrist (who he sees for ADHD) told us he’s seen so many addictions start at that school that he’d never send a kid there.

TCU has become the preferred in-state private school for UMC and wealthy Texas families because it’s more down-to-earth, less flashy wealth and less of a drug culture. SMU is drawing a lot of wealthy California types.

I do know a kid who withdrew from SMU with serious adderal, alcohol and drug addictions. Top kid, smart, but left after 3 semesters. Finally clean and sober a few years later. I'm not enough of a psychiatrist to know if this would have surfaced at any college.

What the hell is going on at SMU?

Why does SMU have so many wealthy students? A random private school in a bummy city being chock-filled with upper middle class students is unexpected.

You failed to prepare him for elite admissions, so you take what you can get.

It's not like Dartmouth is so impressive anyway. My DS was rejected from Harvard.

‘Me and DH’…I can understand why your DS didn’t get into Dartmouth 😂
