I read that as 5 tests with a score of 5, one test with a score of 4, and one test with a score of 3, for a total of 7 tests. And 12 would be unusual but not extraordinarily rare. About 30,000 students took 12 or more AP tests (see https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/media/pdf/number-of-ap-exams-per-student-2024.pdf). My child (at Basis, which is admittedly weird and hyper AP focussed) will have taken 13 by the end of 11th. |
The math = 7. 5+1+1 |
Through 11th? I know my kid could take 12 through the end of HS, but I don't think through 11th and we are at a strong FCPS school. I think a freshman could not possibly take more than 2, and one of those would be AP Pre-Calc. |
Ahh yes sorry. No idea how I decided it was 5 5s, 4 4s, and 3 3s. I am exhausted so I will blame that. |
OP here. The answer was 7, with a total of 13 through senior year. In my kid's case, he could have taken AP human Geo freshman year (which would have made it 8) and added that, but otherwise, he was full with sports and foreign language. |
My DS said that he’d submit AP scores to Georgetown then never did. Still got in EA. |
No, sorry, thru 12th |
| A private college counselor speaks at our school every year and says submit 4s and 5s |
This tells you all you need to know about grade inflation and BS GPAs. You can’t even take close to this number at top and even most privates. |
Many/most privates limit the number of APs students can take (ours is 6 - one in 10th, two in 11th, three in 12th). Most/all publics do not. Colleges know this and compare students only to what is available at their school. It’s just two different systems. |
Most privates dropped AP entirely a couple of years ago, please catch up. |
My son submitted 5 5s and a 36 ACT and was deferred. lol later accepted RD. |

Most allow you to self-report. But we're at a non-DMV private and our college counselor who is in direct communication with many top college admissions officers said that AP scores don't really move the dial in a meaningful way pre-admissions. They can add some confidence or affirmation to an already high GPA (similar to a high ACT or SAT) but it doesn't really elevate a candidate too much.
We are still stuck with a very subjective, holistic review process despite all our desires as parents to have a more transparent, predictable and objective system. Our college counselor suggested we take AP tests only if we wish to get college credit for a specific course by getting a high score, and that many students take the May AP tests in Grade 12 after college admissions is already settled. |
AP Human Geo is a joke AP. Not worth taking. |
