When does advanced math start in AAP? CURRENT PARENTS ONLY

Teacher here. The 3rd AAP standards were cut down a lot. Like it is basically third grade math with extensions. This is from the county pacing guides.

Not OP, but teacher can you clarify when they do accelerate such that they can take the 7th grade math SOL by the end of 6th grade/be prepared for Algebra 1 in 7th under the new pacing guides? It's not been clarified anywhere on this board that I've seen.

Current 5th grader parent, prep for 7th started this year. Kid is subject-specific adv math, did adv last year in 4th, now on the two year adv track with the expectation that they'll be taking the 7th SOL at the end of 6th.

Yes, thank you. My child is not in AAP and we didn't apply this year. Just wondering if we applied next year, if she'd be too far behind in 5th.

It won’t be hard if you teach all of 4 th and 5th grade math before your child starts 5th grade AAP.

5th Adv Math takes 6th grade SOL, 6th Adv Math takes 7th grade SOL. Kids take IOWA and SOL in 6th to see if they are able to skip 8th grade math and take Algebra in 7th. I have been teaching AAP for awhile and I have a pretty good idea who will test in.

My daughter is at a center school. She was placed in Advance math in 4th grade. She went to the AAP class and did 5th grade math. This year she continues to sit with the level 4 AAP class and is doing 6th grade in 5th grade.

Parent of a 5th grader, I'm very involved with her math homework. For us, compared to a non-aap coursework and the normal grade year workbooks. There was very little advanced math in 3rd or 4th grade. (Other non-app kids were doing almost the exact same stuff and the standard grade level workbooks were more advanced than the work that was being brought home in 3rd and 4th grade AAP.)
But, it really deviated in 5th grade. They are into exponents, perfect squares, balancing equations... essentially pre-algebra now. Then, they move onto more geometry in the spring.
_it seemed like they were on grade in 3rd and 4th, but in 5th, it's a grade ahead now.

If your kid does no outside enrichment, I think she would be behind. Just put your kid in mathnasium or something similar to work ahead. Many kids in AAP do this already.

Enrichment numbers are school dependent. Our ES did not have many kids in enrichment classes, there were two kids who openly discussed it and none of DSs friends did any. Plenty of kids are taking Algebra 1 H in 7th and a good number choose to take Math 7 H instead of Algebra.

There are schools where the number of kids in enrichment classes is higher. I do know a kid on my sons soccer team who was at RSM through 6th grade but stopped attending when he got into Algebra 1 in 7th grade.

There are a lot of kids who are in Advanced Math and go on to Algebra 1 H without taking any extra classes.

It probably depends on the school. Our school isn’t a center school and doesn’t have LIV. At the beginning of 5th, they gave all students the option to test into advanced math (not into AAP, just the advanced math class that was separated starting in 5th). Several students that hadn’t previously been in Level II or III tool advanced math that year and then successfully sat for the Iowa end of 6th. I don’t think most did outside enrichment. So it’s certainly possible if your school works this way.

+1 million. I'm a parent of a kid like that. Only 1 of DC's friends ever spoke of doing outside enrichment, yet many tested into Algebra 1 H.

I'm the PP above, if its not fulltime (ie level 4) AAP, advanced math placement is decided by the principal of your school. Level 4 applications etc is a different path. So if your goal is advanced math specifically, you have time b/c school doesn't make decision until late spring. Talk to your kid's teacher about it, they've likely noticed the strength there already but parent convos help keep it in their mind. Mine is dyslexic/anxiety so level 4 seemed like it would create too much stress for them but advanced math only is excellent for their skills.
