Metro will cut all dedicated student buses for Jackson-Reed and Deal students

So is this all ado about nothing - the bus service is still running?

The new proposed map does have a couple of bus lines that look like they would work similarly to the current Deal/JR buses, but not all.

As you note, the D31 (which serves Shepherd Park) would likely see its riders switch to the C87. Similarly, kids from 16th Street Heights who ride the D34 could switch to the C87.

But there doesn't appear to be a replacement for riders from Crestwood who currently take the D33 to Deal or the W45 to JR.

PP - sorry, meant to say that kids from 16th Street Heights who ride the D34 could switch to the C81.

But as I mentioned, kids from Crestwood would not have a replacement for the D33 or W45.

There are also kids in Mount Pleasant who currently take the D32. I'm less familiar with that route so I'm not sure but maybe the C61 would work for them?

On another note, there will now be a bus from Upper NW to MacArthur HS (the C85, which continues to the Foggy Bottom Metro), though the very winding route (Barnaby Woods--Tenleytown--Glover Park--MacArthur area) looks as if it will take absolutely forever.

the like 5 high school age children who go to Deal and JR in Crestwood? A bus for them? Come on.

So we've gone from a bus to needing a FAST bus to Upper Upper.

Parents, if you are not comfortable with your child getting to the bus or Metro safely, why can't you drive them, or walk with them, or take the public transportation with them?

I did a combination of each of these things when my DD was in school. I adjusted my work schedule to allow it as much as I could, but she also had to be responsible enough to do some of this on her own.

As somebody who has never actually been to those two campuses, I just looked on Google Maps to see how hard they are to get to. There is a metro literally blocks away, as well as several bus lines. I had heard about this dedicated bus line and thought it was b/c the two schools were super inaccessible. If they are going to do a dedicated bus for those two schools, the city should provide buses from metro stations in Anacostia, Columbia Heights, Brookland, Deanwood, etc. to get those students to other schools. With the city budget the way it is, b/c they weren't able to provide for all of the students city, it makes sense they aren't going to provide any.

There is a metro right by Deal, but there isn't a metro stop in some of the neighborhoods that are in bounds for Deal.

If the routes have a lot of passengers, I don't see why they would be discontinued. Making middle schoolers travel through downtown doesn't seem efficient.

NP and what you are saying makes sense. What really doesn’t make sense at this point is having kids in boundary for Jackson Reed east of the park. I know that’s a separate discussion but kids shouldn’t be commuting through the park to go to their in boundary school.

Ahahahah, those of us who are slumming it EOTP and are IB for JR would like to thank you for saying the quiet part out loud.

Yep. The proposed C61 comes right through MtP and my kid will only have to adjust to the route name change. (FWIW, my son avoids the buses that are specifically for Deal and JR kids because they are so overcrowded and noisy. He much prefers the H2 or H4.)

You mean living in larger houses for less money than WOTP? As someone who can’t afford that, I truly feel for you.

The new C85 will connect JR/Deal, Hardy MS (two blocks away), MacArthur HS, and Foggy Bottom metro. It will run M-F every 30 minutes during AM and PM rush hours.

Crestwood hasn't been in-bounds for JR in a long time. Aren't the students from Crestwood that were grandfathered in when the boundaries changed nearly all graduated by now?

Separately though I'm not sure why the C83 wouldn't be extended to go to JR/Deal. If you are coming from upper CC you would need to transfer at least once.

Ah, no. That is not what I mean. We couldn't afford anything WOTP. We were lucky to be able to make rent IB.

Actually, the buses can get pretty full from what my MS kid has shared. As another poster described about the D32 versus the H2/H4, they can get even more crowded than the regular city buses.

I also don't think the demand for riding those buses will be abating anytime soon. The last DCPS boundary review preserved in-bound admission to Deal and feeder rights to JR for certain EOTP kids through 2022. Those kids are now in 8th grade and still have another four years before they graduate from JR in 2029.

And from what other posters have shared, it also appears that the grandfathering rules have continued for younger kids as well, at least until the next boundary review is completed.

For those going to Deal - hasn't the grandfathering from Crestwood to Deal ended? As such - why would they have a bus.
This actually makes sense.

It would have been great and easy to extend the C81 route past Hardy and MacArthur as well. Would have been a crazy long ride, but a direct ride all the way from Fort Totten. Could have given another option to kids along 16th Street and an easier commute for OOB kids from all over the city. As is you'll have a lot of OOB kids transferring from the C81 to C85 to get to Hardy and Mac, or taking the C81 to MacArthur Blvd and getting a bike/scooter/whatever the remaining 1.5 miles to high school.
