Gardener removed my peonies

Anonymous
I cut mine to the ground every year and they bloom perfectly.

It’s common to cut them to the ground! I thought you meant he pulled them all up. They’ll be fine. That said, isn’t this a bad time of year to cut everything back?

You’re right he cut them to the ground but the eyes are still there

Woohoo!!

Yes, they can be cut to the ground.

Our neighbors do this every year and the peonies are huge and glorious in the spring!

I never touch ours but the deer eat them down to the ground over the winter and they come back.

Thank goodness for happy endings!

Our coneflower plants were dug up.

Then he did the right thing. You should have written that clearly in the first place. It’s good garden practice to cut peonies to the ground in late fall. It reduces the chances of the unsightly fungus often seen on peony leaves.

It’s recommended for at least the first five years to cut down your peonies so they don’t get damaged during the winter.

Why would they get damaged if you don’t cut them down?

Silly, if I’d known that’s what he did from the get go I wouldn’t have posted at all. You’re so mean.

I was going to suggest this too - you're supposed to cut them almost down to the ground in the winter.

What? You're the one who posted, not knowing what he did.

Buds and blooms are the most sensitive to temperatures below freezing.

Hateful gardener. I’d sue. I love peonies

Peonies are very hardy. Are you sure the bulbs have been dig up? They should grow back.
